Vice President of Construction

Strategic Solutions Unlimited, Inc. (SSU) is a strategically focused, innovative organization that provides world class services and customizable modular structures to include ICD 705 compliant SCIFs across the globe to meet our customers’ unique requirements and critical objectives around the globe.
SSU is currently seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Vice President of Construction to join our team and work in our corporate office in Fayetteville, N.C. Our ideal candidate will beresponsible for the Construction Division’s strategy, financial performance, growth, market position, enterprise risk, and leadership development, and represents the President of Construction in internal and external matters as delegated.
Strategic Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as the principal deputy and strategic advisor to the President of Construction; participate in division and corporate executive decision-making and act on behalf of the President when delegated.
- Share executive ownership of the Construction Division P&L, including revenue, gross margin, operating profit, cash flow, working capital, overhead, and financial forecast commitments; identify performance gaps and lead corrective executive actions.
- Develop and execute the annual business plan and multi-year strategy, including market selection, customer priorities, capability development, geographic focus, revenue mix, margin objectives, organizational requirements, and investment priorities.
- Establish the strategic and financial framework for portfolio management by evaluating backlog, pipeline, contract mix, customer concentration, capacity, capital requirements, risk, and expected return; recommend where SSU should grow, hold, partner, invest, or exit.
- Partner with Business Development and the President of Construction to shape the growth pipeline, establish capture priorities, and make disciplined pursue/no-pursue and bid/no-bid recommendations based on strategic fit, probability of win, pricing posture, resources, risk, and expected profitability.
- Provide executive leadership on pricing and commercial strategy for major pursuits, including target margin, fee strategy, risk allocation, contract terms, teaming approach, and negotiation boundaries; ensure growth is profitable and consistent with SSU’s risk tolerance.
- Lead executive financial reviews with Finance and operating leadership, focusing on revenue, margin performance, forecast accuracy, cash conversion, working capital, project reserves, and material exposures that may affect division results.
- Build and maintain senior relationships with priority government and commercial customers, strategic partners, prime contractors, key suppliers, and other stakeholders; develop alliances that expand market access, differentiation, or competitive advantage.
- Exercise executive governance over material business and portfolio risk, including contractual exposures, claims, customer disputes, bonding/insurance considerations, compliance issues, concentration risk, and significant schedule or cost events with P&L impact.
- Recommend and prioritize investments in people, facilities, technology, systems, equipment, intellectual property, and new capabilities based on strategic value and expected return; ensure resources are allocated to the highest-value priorities.
- Shape the Construction Division organization for scale by establishing leadership requirements, succession plans, decision rights, and accountability; recruit, develop, mentor, and retain senior leaders while leading through the Construction Operations Director and functional directors.
- Represent the Construction Division in corporate planning, budgeting, forecasting, growth, risk, staffing, and investment forums; strengthen SSU’s position in federal, defense, SCIF/SAPF, modular, mission-critical, and related construction markets while building a culture of business ownership, accountability, disciplined growth, professionalism, innovation, respect, and safety.
Executive Performance Accountability
Performance will be evaluated primarily on the business results and long-term health of the Construction Division. Annual targets established with the President of Construction and Executive Leadership should include:
- Achievement of approved revenue, gross-margin, operating-profit, cash-generation, and working-capital objectives.
- Quality and predictability of earnings, including margin preservation, forecast accuracy, cash conversion, and reduction of avoidable financial surprises.
- Bookings, backlog growth and quality, pipeline conversion, profitable growth in priority markets, and the return generated from pricing, teaming, investment, and resource-allocation decisions.
- Customer retention, executive customer relationships, strategic partnerships, market position, and recurring or expanded revenue.
- Effective management of material business risk and the strength, scalability, succession depth, and performance of the Construction Division leadership team.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field preferred; advanced business or executive education is desirable.
- Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible construction, federal contracting, or related business leadership experience, including significant executive or business-unit leadership responsibility.
- Demonstrated P&L leadership with accountability for revenue, gross margin, operating profit, cash, forecasting, and business performance across a meaningful construction portfolio or business unit.
- Proven experience developing and executing business strategy, annual operating plans, budgets, growth plans, investment priorities, capture strategy, pricing, bid/no-bid decisions, negotiations, teaming, and market expansion.
- Experience with federal and/or Department of Defense construction strongly preferred; familiarity with USACE, NAVFAC, GSA, USSOCOM, or similar customers and acquisition environments is highly desirable.
- Experience with modular, off-site, relocatable, secure, mission-critical, SCIF/SAPF, or specialty construction strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of construction economics, portfolio risk, contract structures, bonding/insurance, working capital, cash conversion, and the financial drivers of profitable growth.
- Executive-level communication, negotiation, judgment, and relationship-management skills; proven ability to build organizations, develop senior leaders, and lead through directors. Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret or higher U.S. Government security clearance preferred and to travel domestically and internationally as required.
