Fleet Mechanic I - HIRING RANGE: $25.22 - $29.00 / HOUR Position Highlights: The Fleet Mechanic I performs skilled entry-level inspection, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment. This position requires basic mechanical knowledge, problem-solving ability, and basic skills using available materials and tools. Work is performed under general supervision with significant independent judgment, and results are reviewed through completed work performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

FLEET MECHANIC I:

• Ability to diagnose basic mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic issues on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment under supervision. • Performs minor and major repair work on light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including automated refuse trucks, backhoes, wheel loaders, and other large and small equipment. • Ability to repair and replacement of components such as brakes, steering parts, batteries, belts, hoses, and suspension components under supervision with training. • Changes tires on small and large equipment with guidance as needed. • Ability to reliably perform routine preventative maintenance services such as oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, and lubrication with training. • Learns and assists with vehicle emission testing and related documentation. • Learns and assists with badging, outfitting, and setup of new vehicles and equipment. • Ability to perform basic vehicle and equipment inspections to identify visible mechanical deficiencies and reports findings to lead mechanics or supervisors. • Learns and assists with fabrication, modification, and repair of parts using shop tools and available materials. • Works as part of a team and follows instructions while developing independent work skills. • Maintains accurate records of maintenance and repair activities on work orders under supervision. • Learns to read and interpret maintenance manuals, diagrams, and technical instructions. • Follows all City safety rules, environmental regulations, and workplace policies at all times. • Communicates effectively with supervisors and team members regarding work progress, equipment condition, and safety concerns. • Performs additional entry-level mechanical and shop support duties as assigned.

FLEET MECHANIC II:

• Diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic problems on gasoline and diesel-powered engines, vehicles, and equipment. • Performs minor and major repair work on light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including automated refuse trucks, backhoes, wheel loaders, and other large and small equipment. • Repairs and rebuilds components such as transmissions, engines, braking systems, steering systems, suspension systems, and hydraulic systems. • Ability to independently change tires for small and large equipment. • Performs routine and preventative maintenance on gasoline engines, diesel engines, and small motors to ensure safe and reliable operation. • Performs emission testing on vehicles. • Ability to independently badge and outfit new vehicles and equipment. • Conducts thorough inspections to identify mechanical deficiencies and determine appropriate repair procedures. • Utilizes journeyman-level skills to fabricate, modify, and repair parts using available materials, tools, and supplies. • Works independently with minimal supervision and manages multiple repair tasks efficiently. • Maintains accurate records of inspections, repairs, maintenance activities, and work performed on work orders. • Ability to read and understand maintenance manuals and diagrams. • Ensures compliance with all City policies, environmental regulations, and workplace safety standards. • Communicates effectively with supervisors and team members regarding equipment condition, repair needs, and safety concerns. • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Fleet Services Supervisor.

Education and Experience

FLEET MECHANIC I:

Experience: • High school diploma or GED equivalent • Technical automotive coursework, vocational training, or related certification is preferred. • Prior diversified experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, and major repair of a variety of light- and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, preferred. • Basic knowledge servicing engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems preferred. • Entry level experience working with heavy equipment such as automated refuse trucks, backhoes, and wheel loaders preferred.

Certifications: • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment. • Clean driving record and ability to pass a DOT physical and drug test. • Air Brake Certification within six (6) months of employment. • A/C Recycle & Recovery Certification preferred or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. • State of Colorado Diesel Emissions Certification preferred or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. • First Aid/CPR Certification preferred.

FLEET MECHANIC II:

Experience: • High school diploma or GED equivalent • Five (5) to seven (7) years of diversified experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, and major repair of a variety of light- and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. • Experience servicing engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. • Experience working with heavy equipment such as automated refuse trucks, backhoes, and wheel loaders preferred.
