Position Overview


Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School has an immediate opening for a dedicated, highly skilled Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) for a 12-month position (available as Full-Time or Part-Time).


Aligned with the Board of Certification (BOC) Practice Analysis, 8th Edition , the Athletic Trainer will oversee the prevention, emergency care, clinical evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and administrative management of athletic injuries and illnesses across our interscholastic sports teams.

Primary Responsibilities & Essential Duties

Risk Reduction, Wellness, and Health Literacy

• Screening & Risk Identification: Oversee pre-participation physical evaluations (PPEs), medical history reviews, and baseline concussion screenings.
• Environmental Safety: Monitor and respond to environmental risk factors (e.g., heat index, lightning, air quality, field conditions) in compliance with Prince William County guidelines.
• Preventive Care: Design and implement individual and group injury-reduction strategies/pre-hab, warm-up routines, and prophylactic taping, bracing, or padding.
• Health Literacy & Wellness: Educate student-athletes, parents, and coaches on concussions, hydration, nutrition, recovery, sleep, hygiene, and overall physical and mental well-being.

Assessment, Evaluation, and Diagnosis

• Clinical Evaluations: Perform comprehensive physical examinations and evaluations of acute, subacute, and chronic athletic injuries and medical conditions.
• Clinical Diagnosis: Formulate accurate clinical diagnoses using evidence-based assessment techniques and functional testing.
• Physician Referrals: Identify condition severity and make appropriate, timely medical referrals to physicians, specialists, or emergency services.

Critical Incident Management

• Emergency Action Plans (EAPs): Develop, update, and rehearse venue-specific EAPs in coordination with school leadership and local emergency medical services (EMS).
• Acute Care Response: Serve as the primary healthcare provider for acute athletic emergencies, administering CPR/AED, first aid, wound care, fracture stabilization, and spinal motion restriction.
• Event Coverage: Provide on-site sports medicine coverage for home athletic practices, home games, and select away contests as assigned.

Therapeutic Intervention

• Plan of Care: Establish, execute, and adjust individualized therapeutic plans of care based on clinical evaluations and evidence-based practice.
• Rehabilitation & Modalities: Utilize therapeutic exercises, manual therapy, and therapeutic modalities to address impairments and restore optimal functional activity.
• Return-to-Play Protocols: Oversee gradual Return-to-Play (RTP) progressions-especially following concussions or major musculoskeletal injuries-in collaboration with the treating physician and the school nurse

Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility

• Documentation & Records: Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential electronic medical records (EMR) for all injuries, treatments, referrals, and clearance notes in compliance with FERPA/HIPAA standards using Arbiter platform.
• Facility & Inventory Operations: Manage day-to-day athletic training room operations, maintaining a clean, orderly facility, tracking supplies, and managing the sports medicine budget.
• Multi-Disciplinary Communication: Maintain professional, regular communication with athletes, coaches, parents, athletic directors, administrative personnel, and physicians regarding athlete status.
• Professional Standards: Adhere strictly to the BOC Standards of Professional Practice, Virginia State Practice Acts, and the Diocese of Arlington Catholic mission and values of the school.

Required Qualifications

• Education: Master's degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE-accredited program.
• Certifications & Licensure:

• Active Board of Certification (BOC) Certification in good standing.
• Virginia State Licensure (or immediate eligibility) as an Athletic Trainer.
• Current BLS and First Aid Certification.
• Additional Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist credential preferred, but not required.

• Experience: High school or collegiate athletic training experience preferred; recent graduates with strong clinical backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

• Physical Demands: Sprint and navigate uneven terrain for immediate emergency on-field response. Endurance to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, bend, and reach for extended periods in any indoor or outdoor weather conditions. Lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted (equipment, water coolers, medical kits) or up to 100lbs with assistance.

• Mission Alignment: Understanding of and respect for the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church in an educational and athletic setting.

• Excellent clinical judgment, diagnostic skill, and crisis-management abilities.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills across diverse audiences (teens, parents, coaches, physicians, administrators).
• Organizational efficiency in documentation, inventory, and scheduling.

Working Conditions & Schedule

• 12-Month Schedule: Year-round operational engagement, including fall, winter, and spring sports seasons, as well as summer conditioning/camps.
• Hours: Flexible scheduling required, primarily focused on afternoon/evening practice and competition hours, with willingness to work periodic Saturday shifts as needed to support game coverage or special events.

Compensation & Benefits

• Competitive salary commensurate with experience and position status: Full-time $60,000-65,000 per year or Part-time: $32-35 per hour

• Professional development allowance of up to $1500 for continuing education units (CEUs) and BOC maintenance.
