Lineman Apprentice

Apprentice Lineman

Ameren Missouri has been providing electric and gas service for more than 100 years, and our electric rates are among the lowest in the nation. Ameren Missouri's mission is to power the quality of life for our 1.2 million electric and 132,000 natural gas customers in central and eastern Missouri. Our service area covers 64 counties and more than 500 communities including the greater St. Louis area.

Under immediate supervision; working in a line construction or maintenance crew in the capacity of an Apprentice Lineman in training for advancement to Journeyman Lineman, to receive instructions and perform work involving such practice in preparation for such skilled duty; to advance in such work in accordance with the Apprentice Lineman Agreement and apprentice curriculum, initially on unenergized circuits, and later on energized circuits ranging progressively from lower to maximum voltage; to perform such work under the immediate supervision of a Lineman initially, and then independently after the ability to perform each phase of the work skillfully and safely has been demonstrated; and to perform similar and less-skilled work as assigned.

During the initial period, make up or assemble line materials, hardware, or pole fixtures; climb poles and assist Linemen as directed on services, secondaries, and unenergized conductors or conductors of a higher voltage rating; and perform any groundwork normally performed by a Lineman.

Later, continue the work of the first period and, in addition, work alone on energized conductors ranging to 480 volts; also perform less-complicated work on higher voltages under the immediate supervision of a Lineman.

Finally, perform the full range of duties of a skilled Lineman as a rounding-out and proficiency-attainment period, continuing under the immediate supervision of and accompanied by a fully skilled Lineman while working on voltages above 480 volts. May work alone on conductors of all voltages involving work of a less-complex nature and, under the direct but not constant supervision of a foreman, perform more difficult work in preparation for examination.

At the end of the Apprentice Program, an Apprentice Lineman must successfully complete an examination, either oral, written, practical demonstration, or selected features of all three.

Key Responsibilities
  • Erect poles and install anchors, guy systems, and structural framing.
  • String, sag, and secure overhead conductors of all gauges.
  • Install rigging equipment, including gin poles, blocks, and booms.
  • Install, connect, maintain, and remove transformers, regulators, capacitors, and associated equipment.
  • Perform work on energized lines at all voltages following established safe-work procedures.
  • Install, remove, and maintain primary and secondary meters, enclosures, and related equipment.
  • Trim trees and clear vegetation that impact electric facilities.
  • Install pole hardware, brackets, terminal equipment, and meter enclosures.
  • Erect and maintain steel towers and A-frame or H-frame structures; paint steel structures as required.
  • Perform switching operations in accordance with Ameren's established procedures.
  • Disconnect and reconnect customer electric services.
  • Install, inspect, maintain, and repair streetlights and dusk-to-dawn lighting systems.
  • Test circuits and equipment for opens, grounds, and short circuits; clear issues where possible.
  • Replace fuses at the line, transformer, or substation level.
  • Inspect and report on substation conditions; complete emergency and routine switching as directed by Distribution or District Dispatch, Patrol, troubleshoot, repair, and restore service on overhead and underground electric systems.
  • Respond to residential, commercial, and industrial trouble calls; complete customer service repairs necessary to restore power
  • Verify relay and breaker operations; reset protective devices as required.
  • Establish and verify phase rotation on overhead and underground systems.
  • Respond to fire alarms affecting electric facilities; clear Company and customer circuits.
  • Install and remove protective grounds on poles and in substations.
  • Perform pole-top rescue, first aid, and CPR when needed.
  • Respond to after-hours outage calls and storm-restoration assignments.
  • Ensure proper care and use of tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and a safety-first mindset while interacting with coworkers, customers, and the public.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • Must pass all state and federal licensing requirements, medical evaluations, drug screening, and the CAST test.
  • Must meet the 25-mile residency requirement and be able to report to job sites within 50 miles.
  • Must maintain the ability to report within 30 minutes when accepting overtime.
  • This position is subject to the collective bargaining agreement between Ameren Missouri and IBEW Local 702.

Working Conditions
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Frequent night, weekend, and holiday work during outages or storms.
  • May work in cramped, elevated, uneven, or slippery conditions.
  • Subject to storm response at any time.
Hazards
  • Exposure to street traffic and energized equipment.
  • Risks associated with lifting and hauling heavy materials.
  • Potential minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
  • Potential exposure to falls, falling objects, cave-ins, and other inherent hazards.
