Construction Inspector III

Job Summary Acts as a lead inspector as assigned by their respective supervisor. Assists in training sessions and verifies inspection records and project requirements for acceptance. This position also schedules, coordinates, and conducts complex inspections of civil construction and responds to citizen complaints. Responsibilities Inspect private developer construction projects and City capital improvement projects to ensure compliance with MAG specifications and City Engineering Design Standards and Policies Manual in civil engineering and public works areas, including sewer, water, storm drain, grading, paving, street light, and bridge construction. Interpret, apply, and enforce the City’s Engineering Design Standards, MAG specifications, and applicable federal, state, and local codes, laws, rules, and regulations. Review and interpret construction plans and ensure compliance with requirements governing materials, utilities, traffic, sanitation, and other factors. Coordinate construction activities, sequences, and schedules with City departments, divisions, and outside agencies such as engineers, developers, and contractors. Initiate letters of acceptance when work meets specifications, as-built drawings have been reviewed, and all testing reports are collected. Notify other City departments when their facilities will be affected by construction. Recommend and participate in revisions to the Engineering Design Standards and Policies Manual and City Approved Materials List. Record information on as-built plans, review final as-built drawings, and assist Inspectors I and II. Communicate and verify progress payment requests, compute final quantities from contract bid schedules, and determine payment amounts. Prepare and maintain records of inspection activities, enter project data into Accela, and attend project meetings, including preconstruction and progress meetings. Maintain project files with detailed documentation of correspondence, test results, approved plans, shop drawings, and compliance certificates. Exhibit a service orientation toward customers and maintain productive working relationships. Perform plan review and inspection of traffic control plans and implementations in compliance with state and local requirements. Assist in scheduling workloads of inspectors to ensure coverage of assigned areas. Ensure construction is completed per approved plans and documentation is approved for project acceptance. Assist in training new and existing staff to enforce procedures. Serve as backup for Construction Inspection Supervisors in their absence or vacancy. Requirements Formal education or knowledge: Requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical field obtained by at least six months to one year of advanced study or training beyond high school equivalency, preferably from a community college, vocational, business, or technical school. Experience: Minimum three years of experience in a related field. Valid driver’s license. Reading: Ability to read general correspondence, construction plans and specifications, engineering technical standards, and installation standards. Math: Ability to perform engineering calculations, trigonometry, algebra, geometry, and general arithmetic. Writing: Ability to write general correspondence, memorandums, handouts, letters, and to enter and retrieve project data using the City’s permit and inspection software. Managerial: Semi‑complex. Function as a lead worker, overseeing work quality, training, instruction, and scheduling. Policy/Decision Making: Significant. Follow standard operating procedures and policies; choose appropriate procedures; complex work may be reviewed before finalization. Technical Skills: Comprehensive. Requires practical knowledge of the technical field with analytical judgment and decision‑making ability. Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: Moderate. Manage sensitive interactions and negotiate challenging issues while maintaining tact.
