ED NURSING SUPERVISOR

Job Summary:

The Emergency Department (ED) Nursing Supervisor is a registered nurse who has responsibility for the

supervision of patient care, nursing personnel, and unit operations. The ED Nursing Supervisor works

collaboratively with ED leadership and is responsible for the oversight of daily operations of the ED

including off shift and weekend supervision of nursing and Emergency Technician personnel. The

supervisor manages resources, quality improvement, professional staff development, and monitors

patient throughput to facilitate efficient clinical operations. This position is responsible for a safe and

therapeutic unit environment and will be clinically oriented to work in the ED as staff RN to assist when

the unit needs exceed the resources. To appropriately plan, direct and evaluate patient and family care,

the Supervisor communicates and collaborates with a variety of staff including, nursing leadership, ED

staff and senior team members, medical staff, ancillary personnel, case management, social work and

other departments. The ED Nursing Supervisor has educational responsibilities within the disciplines of

nursing and the hospital. The Supervisor participates in and may lead Performance Improvement work in

the Emergency Department in a manner consistent with the facility’s standard expectations. The ED

Nursing Supervisor may act as a resource to the institution and community in areas of expertise.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 Supervises Emergency Department nursing personnel and other nonprofessional staff, providing

instruction as needed.

Duties/Responsibilities:

 Serves as a role model, demonstrating effective patient care, leadership, and professional behavior.

 Plans for and implements a staffing pattern that meets patient care needs and supports primary

nursing.

 Evaluates staff performance, including following processes appropriate for counseling and

progressive discipline.

 Participates in the recruitment process, including interviewing and selection of staff.

 Informs, teaches, and enforces adherence to new or revised hospital or departmental policies and

procedures.

 Assists with the coordination and development of staff meeting and newsletter content.

 Communicates department/leadership decisions and policies to staff. Facilitates the flow of

information from medical staff to the nursing staff regarding patient care procedures and new

equipment.

 Facilitates the orientation of all new staff and promotes ongoing continuing education in

collaboration with the CNO.

 Systematically and continuously collects and assesses data in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary

team to provide therapeutic care for patients.

 Develops and utilizes a process for effective fiscal management, including utilization of materials and

supplies.

 Provides input into preparation the budget to the Nurse Manager and Director.

 Monitors fiscal reports in collaboration with the CNO.

 Utilizes formal and informal organizational structures of the institution as part of the problem-solving

process.

 Provides a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, students and unit staff.

 Promotes cost-effective behavior in staff through observation and education.

 Participates in the development of annual ED goals and objectives. Identifies and resolves complex or

recurring operational problems and consults with the CNO when necessary.

 Acts as a consultant and clinical resource to staff through provision of patient care and coordination

of family centered care.

 Assures that patient/family nursing care is provided within the Emergency Department’s established

standards of care.

 Reviews, investigates and follows up on patient relations concerns, Infection Control, Employee

Health exposures and Compliance issues.

 Coordinates medical and nursing management of patient care and ensures appropriate staffing levels

and skill mix.

 Participates in reviewing and updating patient care policies and procedures.

 Promotes compliance with regulatory body standards by consistent rounding and performing

quarterly and monthly tracers and audits.

 Develops, maintains, and evaluates unit-based documentation tools to promote continuity on all

patient care activities.

 Creates an environment in which intellectual curiosity is stimulated and continued learning is

supported.

 Identifies professional strengths and areas for growth and demonstrates professional development

through formal and informal learning experiences.

 Participates in professional organizations in area of specialization and interest.

 Participates on ED and hospital committees as directed.

 Completes other duties as assigned.

 Adheres to the facility’s Standard of Excellence.

Required Skills/Abilities:

 Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.

 Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education and Experience:

 Current license to practice nursing in the state.

 Three (3) years Critical Care, ED or Charge RN experience in an inpatient or ED environment.

 Five (5) or more years of relevant experience in Management, Supervisory, or charge RN experience

with demonstrated success preferred.

Physical Requirements:

 Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

 Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and reaching

 Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times
