The City of East Palo Alto is actively seeking motivated, compassionate, personable Police Recruits. The Police Recruit attends and successfully completes an approved Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified basic police academy training program; performs all related learning and testing activities; performs a variety of routine to complex field and administrative activities in support of police services and programs for the City’s Police Department; provides comprehensive non-sworn staff support to Police Department supervisory and management personnel on a wide variety of law enforcement programs, projects, and services; responds to public requests and performs related duties, as assigned.

Be a collaborative, inclusive, and encouraging team member. Be adaptable and able to work under stressful or difficult conditions. Be comfortable working in inclement weather conditions at all hours of the day and night, including on weekends and holidays. Able to keep calm and patient with members of the public in stressful or volatile situations. Be able to demonstrate independent judgment. Possess excellent people skills. Show dedication to the City of East Palo Alto and the community. Bilingual is highly desirable.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Education: Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth (12th) grade. Experience: No experience is required but experience in a law enforcement environment is desired. License and Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by the time of appointment and a satisfactory driving record. Special Requirements: Free from any disqualifications for employment including felony convictions Gov. Code 1029 Legally authorized to work in the United States by federal law Gov. Code 1031 Be at least 21 years of age Gov. Code 1031.4 Good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation Gov. Code 1031 Be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation Found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition, including bias against race or ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, disability, or sexual orientation, which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. California P.O.S.T. Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) or other professionally developed and validated test of reading and writing ability. With a passing T-score of 42 or above. Commission Regulation 1951 Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) with a score of 330 or above Penal Code section 13510

The City of East Palo Alto Police Departmenthas built a strong partnership between the community and the department to help enhance public safety and improve the quality of life for the people who live and work in the City of East Palo Alto. The Police Department's goals are to focus on crime suppression and analysis, problem solving, building community relationships, and creating effective crime prevention strategies. The philosophy is that the more the department is informed and openly available aboutpublic safety issues, the better we can work together toward safer, more secure, and healthier neighborhoods.

SELECTION PROCESS:

It is important to complete all required application materials. Applications will be reviewed in detail to identify the most qualified candidates to interview. The most qualified will be invited to a panel interview. Those who pass the panel interview will be advanced to an interview with the Chief of Police. Successful candidates will be required to undergo a standard Police background investigation including a polygraph exam, psychological evaluation, and complete physical exam with drug screening.
