Position Overview Job Title: Surgery Clinic Technician (Animal Care Technician II) – Classified, Class 5864 – Salary Grade 4 – Hiring Pay $19.16. Department: Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) – Shelter clinic providing advanced medical care and management of animals. Job Type: Classified. Position is open until filled. Shift Schedule: Monday to Friday; five (5) or eight (8) hour shifts: 6:00am – 2:00pm, 6:30am – 2:30pm, 7:00am – 3:00pm, 8:00am – 4:00pm, 10:00am – 6:00pm, 11:00am – 7:00pm, 12:00pm – 8:00pm. Mandatory weekends for spay and neuter events apply to all clinic staff. Responsibilities Clinic Technicians assist with medical treatments, ensuring compliance with animal welfare standards in a high-volume care setting. The Surgery Clinic Technician will: Prep animals for surgery by restraining, premedicating, collecting temperatures and weights for shelter and fostered animals; give pre‑ and post‑operation instructions to foster and adoptive parents; maintain accurate documentation of incoming animals; administer medications as directed by veterinarians; clean and sanitize cages, kennels, floors, walls, equipment, & treatment areas; assist in euthanasia of animals following safety protocols; review and organize documents, create new records, input and retrieve information using automated systems; prepare and update logs, status records, and other documentation; assist in maintaining accountability of scheduled drugs; perform animal triage and treatment; perform daily health checks on impounded animals; document pertinent animal health data; prepare and process euthanized, potentially rabid animals for laboratory analysis; collect and dispose of dead animals according to shelter procedure and health codes. Essential Functions (Illustrative) Check incoming animals for obvious health problems and injuries. Ensure humane treatment and accurate, complete documentation. Assist in medication administration to sick animals as prescribed. Clean and sanitize all areas to maintain sanitary conditions. Assist in performing euthanasia with safety protocols. Review and organize documents; create new records; input and retrieve information. Prepare and update logs, status records, and documentation. Assist in maintaining drug accountability. Administer necessary treatments under veterinarian directions. Perform animal triage and treatment. Daily health checks on impounded animals. Document pertinent animal health data. Prepare euthanized animals for laboratory analysis. Dispose of dead animals per shelter procedure and health codes. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED certificate. Six months of experience in a veterinary clinic or similar animal handling position, or completion of a vet technician/vet assistant certification. (Correct accreditation may substitute education/experience.) Or one year of experience working with Pima County as an Animal Care Technician I, Animal Care Response Technician or closely related position. Preferred Qualifications One year of experience working, volunteering, or interning in an animal shelter or vet clinic. One year of experience working in an animal clinic as a technician or assistant. Six months of experience giving vaccines, medicating, or restraining animals. Six months using veterinary medical terminology or transcribing medical records. Certificate or completion of a Veterinary Assistant or Technician degree from an accredited college. Licenses and Certificates Valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application or appointment. Within nine months of appointment, receive the full series of pre‑exposure rabies immunizations; medical inability to be immunized must be verified by County Physician. Physical/Sensory Work Requirements Lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling up to 100lbs maximum, 50lbs frequently. Regular bending, crawling, kneeling, reaching, squatting, stooping, and tasks requiring grasping and fine motor skills. Hearing and communication in noisy environments, including in person, by phone, and via radio. Depth perception and peripheral vision. Working Conditions Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, direct sun, and driving. Occasional exposure to fall and foot hazards, traffic, water, and vapors. Background Check and Screening County requires pre‑employment background checks.
