Medical Director, Helen & Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute

Job Summary The Medical Director will provide strategic and clinical leadership for one of South Florida's premier pediatric hematology/oncology programs, guiding clinical operations, research direction, academic growth, and program development for children with cancer and blood disorders. Responsible for building on a strong foundation of philanthropic investment, academic affiliation, and state-funded research to advance world-class, family-centered pediatric cancer care and expand the frontiers of precision medicine and clinical research. Description Job Summary The Medical Director will provide strategic and clinical leadership for one of South Florida's premier pediatric hematology/oncology programs, guiding clinical operations, research direction, academic growth, and program development for children with cancer and blood disorders. Responsible for building on a strong foundation of philanthropic investment, academic affiliation, and state-funded research to advance world-class, family-centered pediatric cancer care and expand the frontiers of precision medicine and clinical research. The Medical Director leads the Institute's clinical mission, strategic growth, academic advancement, research portfolio, and external engagement. Responsible for oversight of clinical services, multidisciplinary care models, faculty development, philanthropic relationships, and compliance with institutional and state-funded research requirements. Job Specific Duties Provide medical direction and oversight for all clinical services within the Institute, including hematology, oncology, stem cell and bone marrow transplant, sickle cell disease, and related subspecialty programs. Ensure delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, family-centered care consistent with national standards, including Children’s Oncology Group guidelines. Oversee day-to-day clinical operations, including inpatient and outpatient coordination, infusion and treatment scheduling, and multidisciplinary tumor board leadership. Lead quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical outcomes initiatives, including tracking and reporting of key clinical metrics. Maintain oversight of the Institute’s cancer registry program and ensure compliance with state and national reporting standards. Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to attending physicians, fellows, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff. Direct physician coverage models, on-call schedules, and escalation protocols to ensure consistent, high-quality coverage across all sites of care. Oversee credentialing, privileging, and ongoing performance evaluation of Institute medical staff in coordination with the Medical Executive Committee. Ensure integration of palliative care, psychosocial support, survivorship care, and other supportive services into the care model. Lead response planning for complex or high-acuity cases requiring coordination across multiple subspecialties. Partner with hospital administration to define and execute the Institute’s strategic growth plan, including service line expansion and new program development. Identify opportunities to grow clinical trial capacity, subspecialty services, and multidisciplinary care models. Represent the Institute in system-level planning related to Nicklaus Children’s Health System’s centers of excellence. Lead workforce planning and recruitment strategy to build subspecialty depth in areas such as neuro-oncology, cellular therapy, and survivorship. Develop and monitor annual operating and capital plans for the Institute in partnership with hospital finance and administrative leadership. Evaluate and implement new technologies, treatment modalities, and care delivery models that strengthen the Institute’s competitive position regionally and nationally. Support efforts to maintain and expand national rankings and recognitions, including U.S. News & World Report standing and Children’s Oncology Group membership status. Monitor the pediatric cancer landscape in Florida and the Southeast to identify strategic opportunities and competitive gaps. Provide oversight and direction for the Institute’s research portfolio, including grant-funded initiatives supported by the State of Florida and other funding sources. Direct the strategic deployment of the Institute’s Cancer Connect Collaborative Research Incubator Fund appropriation to expand clinical trials, advance innovative treatments, and strengthen research infrastructure. Oversee reporting and accountability requirements associated with state-appropriated research funding, in coordination with hospital administration and state partners. Grow the Institute’s clinical trial portfolio beyond its current base of more than 40 active cancer-related studies and maintain full membership standing in the Children’s Oncology Group. Strengthen and expand collaborative research with FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, including joint clinical trials and translational research programs. Support faculty development, publication activity, and academic productivity among Institute physicians and researchers. Serve as a liaison between the Institute and FIU on pediatric oncology education, training, and joint appointments. Identify and pursue additional grant funding opportunities at the state, federal, and foundation levels to complement existing research investments. Champion translational and precision medicine research initiatives that connect laboratory discovery with direct clinical application for patients. Partner with the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Foundation on donor engagement and stewardship, including maintaining a strong relationship with the Shaham family and other Institute supporters. Represent the Institute publicly, including with media, community organizations, elected officials, and philanthropic partners. Support grant reporting and outcomes communication for state-funded and privately funded research initiatives, including updates related to the Cancer Connect Collaborative Research Incubator Fund. Participate in public events and announcements related to state and philanthropic funding, alongside hospital leadership and government partners. Support future fundraising campaigns and donor cultivation efforts aimed at expanding the Institute’s clinical and research capacity. Serve as a spokesperson for the Institute’s mission and outcomes with local and national media. Manage physician staffing, recruitment, and performance for the Institute’s medical staff. Oversee budget planning and resource allocation for clinical and research operations in partnership with hospital leadership. Ensure compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and institutional requirements, including those tied to state grant funding. Oversee documentation, audit readiness, and reporting processes required for continued state and grant funding eligibility. Build and maintain relationships with state health officials and other external partners involved in the Cancer Connect Collaborative Research Incubator Fund. Ensure appropriate succession planning and leadership development within the Institute’s physician team. Maintain strong record of research productivity, grant activity, or academic publication. #DOX Qualifications Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) from an accredited medical school Doctor of Medicine current Florida medical license and in good standing with medical board Board certification in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Minimum of 8 to 10 years of clinical experience in pediatric hematology/oncology, including progressive leadership responsibility. Experience leading clinical teams, programs, or service lines. Experience engaging donors, academic partners, or community stakeholders. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Exceptional clinical, research and teaching skills and have a commitment to academic pediatrics. Able to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, families and co-workers. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information. Ability to interpret, adapt, and react calmly under stressful conditions. Ability to problem solve to formulate a plan of care and evaluate the patient's response to care.
