Position Summary
The Equipment Operator I/II/III plays a vital role in supporting Public Works operations by maintaining and improving the Town’s infrastructure, facilities, and essential services. This position performs a variety of maintenance, construction, repair, and equipment operation activities, including street maintenance, utility support, stormwater operations, snow and ice control, and emergency response. 

These positions operates a variety of vehicles, tools, and equipment while performing assigned maintenance activities and supporting daily field operations. Equipment Operators work as part of a team to complete projects safely and efficiently, respond to changing operational needs, and provide dependable services that support the community.

Equipment Operator I:

• Performs routine maintenance, repair, and construction activities related to streets, roadways, rights-of-way, stormwater systems, and other municipal infrastructure under guidance. 
• Assists with pothole repair, grading, drainage maintenance, street sweeping, mowing, debris removal, and other Public Works activities. 
• Assists with water utility maintenance, including repairs, valve operations, utility locates, excavation, and emergency response. 
• Operates assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment after completing required training and demonstrating safe operating practices. 
• Assists with snow and ice control operations, including plowing, sanding, deicing, and manual snow removal. 
• Performs routine equipment inspections, cleaning, fueling, and operator-level maintenance. 
• Performs traffic control and flagging duties as assigned. 
• Completes work orders, equipment logs, and maintenance records. 
• Responds to after-hours, emergency, and on-call assignments as required. 

Equipment Operator II:

• Independently performs skilled maintenance, repair, and construction activities related to streets, roadways, right-of-way, stormwater systems, water utilities, and other municipal infrastructure. 
• Operates a variety of trucks, snowplows, loaders, skid steers, tractors, sweepers, and other equipment safely and efficiently. 
• Performs complex roadway, drainage, utility, and infrastructure maintenance activities with limited supervision. 
• Performs water utility maintenance, including repairs, excavation, valve operations, utility locates, and emergency response activities. 
• Performs snow and ice control operations independently and responds to changing weather and operational conditions. 
• Performs equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, and identifies equipment issues requiring repair. 
• Installs, repairs, and maintains street signs, traffic control devices, and other Public Works infrastructure. 
• Maintains accurate work records, equipment logs, and work orders using computerized systems. 
• Provides guidance and support for less experienced employees. 
• Responds to emergencies, after-hours, and on-call assignments as needed. 

Equipment Operator III:

• Performs advanced maintenance, repair, construction, and operational activities involving streets, roadways, stormwater systems, water utilities, and other municipal infrastructure. 
• Operates specialized and heavy equipment requiring advanced proficiency and technical knowledge. 
• Leads complex maintenance activities, troubleshooting efforts, and field operations requiring independent judgment. 
• Performs advanced water utility maintenance, including complex repairs, excavation, troubleshooting, and emergency response. 
• Performs advanced snow and ice control operations and supports emergency response during severe weather and infrastructure events. 
• Conducts advanced equipment inspections, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance; identifies operational concerns and recommends solutions. 
• Assists with coordinating daily field activities, prioritizing assignments, and ensuring safe and efficient completion of work. 
• Serves as a technical resource for equipment operation, maintenance practices, and Public Works procedures. 
• Trains, mentors, and provide technical guidance to Equipment Operator I and II employees. 
• Provides field support and leadership during emergencies, after-hours, and on-call operations. 

Education | Work Experience | Certifications/Licenses
Equipment Operator I:

• High school diploma or equivalent 
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. 
• Must possess or obtain a Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements within twelve (12) months of employment. 
• Previous experience in Public Works, construction, streets, stormwater, utilities, landscaping, parks maintenance, equipment operation, or a related field is preferred but not required. 
• Flagger/traffic control training and equipment-specific training must be completed as required by the Town. 

Equipment Operator II:

• High school diploma or equivalent 
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. 
• Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements. 
• Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in Public Works, construction, streets, stormwater, utilities, equipment operation, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 
• Flagger certification required.  
• Forklift certification required.  
• Additional certifications related to equipment operation, traffic control, trenching/excavation, water distribution, stormwater, snow operations, or other public works functions may be required based on assignment. 

Equipment Operator III:

• High school diploma or equivalent 
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. 
• Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements. 
• Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in Public Works, construction, streets, stormwater, utilities, equipment operation, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 
• Flagger certification required.  
• Forklift certification required.  
• Additional certifications related to equipment operation, traffic control, trenching/excavation, water distribution, stormwater, snow operations, or other public works functions may be required based on assignment. 

Working Conditions
The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to operate tools, equipment, machinery, and controls. The employee may frequently be required to stand, walk, climb, balance, crouch, kneel, bend, twist, reach, and perform other physical activities necessary to complete assigned duties. 
• Must be able to frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 150 pounds. 
• Must be able to safely operate and access vehicles, equipment, tools, and machinery as required by the position. 
• Must be able to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS) prior to handling hazardous materials or chemicals requiring safety documentation. 
• Work may be performed indoors or outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, precipitation, and other environmental conditions. 
• While performing assigned duties, the employee may be exposed to fumes, dust, airborne particles, moving mechanical equipment, noise, vibration, hazardous materials, uneven terrain, and other workplace hazards. 
• May be required to work varying schedules, including extended hours, weekends, holidays, and after-hours or emergency assignments, depending on operational needs.
