The Work You Will Do: This position will operate various vehicles and heavy equipment for bridge and roadway maintenance, perform minor equipment maintenance, and assist with repairs and cleaning. Lead and coordinate the work of a maintenance crew, including planning tasks, selecting materials, maintaining records, and preparing reports. Also perform manual labor, temporary traffic control, basic carpentry, masonry, painting, and helps install highway signs. Train crew members in equipment operation and traffic control procedures. Where You Will Work: Brevard Maintenance located at 555 Camp Road, Cocoa, FL 32927 Annual Salary Range: 44,264.58 - 57,283.58 Your Specific Responsibilities: Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to, road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated including but not limited to: check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Assists in the repair of operated equipment. Cleans and washes equipment. Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities. Oversees crews performing maintenance activities. Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew. Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees. Maintains records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments. Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs. Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed. The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of: Mathematical calculations Standard safety rules and procedures The procedures, techniques and use of equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges and/or other highway structures Skills in: Operating a variety of hand and power tools Operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles Completing job related reports and forms Communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions Ability to: Operate a variety of heavy equipment Train others Read and understand job related materials Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others \ Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic Stand for an extended period of time Other Job-Related Requirements: Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on call” (24-hour duty) when necessary. While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. A Class “B” CDL is required at time of hire. Obtain a Class "A" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a Class "A" CDL license within 10 months of appointment to the position. Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must successfully obtain and maintain training, certification, a satisfactorily criminal background check and any additional requirements provided by the Department of Corrections in order to supervise inmates. Minimum Qualifications: Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles. A Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required at time of hire. Obtain a CDL Class "A" Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class "A" license within 10 months of appointment to the position. This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following: three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation; any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years; a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years. Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed. In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. Click here to register for the Clearinghouse. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant. To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11. Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee. If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.
