Description
The Deputy Director of Organizing is responsible for directing successful organizing campaigns and building an effective and sustainable statewide organizing program. This individual will supervise and direct organizers in achieving the organizational goals of building strong member-driven local units and growing the Ohio Nurses Association within the constantly evolving healthcare industry.

Responsibilities

• Works at the direction of and in collaboration with the Executive Director and Director of Organizing and Field Services to plan and execute an overall organizing strategy for ONA.
• Direct management of the organizing department.
• Assist with the hiring, training, and supervision of the Organizers, as well as other staff members assigned to organizing projects.
• Assist with the direction of ONA’s organizing program from targeting non-unionized healthcare facilities, to working with local leadership to develop highly functional, solution-driven local units.
• Other duties as assigned.

Desirable Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience, which would likely produce the necessary knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

• Bachelor’s degree or higher.
• Experience in a supervisory role is preferred.
• Significant experience in the labor movement, including a minimum of 5 years of union organizing experience with increasing responsibility.
• Organizing experience specific to healthcare is preferred.
• Background or interest in healthcare.
• Working experience managing organizing campaigns and supervising staff. 
• Successful conflict management experience and a track record for achieving results.
• Demonstrated experience in developing and managing large bottom-up union organizing campaigns against major anti-union consultants.
• Experience in training and managing organizers, managing strikes, as well as negotiating collective bargaining agreements.
• Experience in working as an organizer and lead organizer on bottom-up organizing campaigns and building rank-and-file organizing committees. 
• Commitment to social justice.
• Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish close relationships with people from different cultural and economic backgrounds.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, work efficiently, and stay organized.
• Attention to detail.
• Personal commitment to exceptional work ethic.
• Willing to work flexible, sometimes long, hours.
• Commitment to travel both statewide and nationally, as required.
• Valid, unencumbered driver’s license. 

Typical Physical Requirements

• Regularly uses a telephone and email system for communication.
• Frequently communicates with coworkers, ONA members, and unorganized healthcare professionals who have inquiries. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
• Needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Must be able to drive a car.
• Frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Travels extensively, sometimes on a daily basis, depending on workload, outside of the office and drives to locations statewide. Must be able to transport a variety of boxes, bags, and materials.
• Light work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Authority and Relationships
Works under minimal supervision. Reports to the Executive Director and the Director of Organizing and Field Services. Operates within the Department’s budget. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
