Supervising Adult Psychiatrist-Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (Open & Promotional)

Position Overview The Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) Division of San Mateo County Health seeks an experienced psychiatrist to serve as Supervising Adult Psychiatrist – Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (Medical Chief for South County and East Palo Alto Adult Mental Health Clinics). The role is full‑time, 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week). The Supervising Adult Psychiatrist will provide leadership and supervision to several psychiatrists and other disciplines, maintain a clinical caseload emphasizing seriously mentally ill clients with or without co‑occurring substance use disorders, and report directly to the Medical Director of BHRS. Ideal Candidate Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry and has at least three years of experience supervising psychiatrists and/or psychiatry residents. Has a keen interest in and knowledge of policy and planning on behavioral health issues and organizational and clinical performance measurements. Knowledge of substance use disorder treatment and medications for addiction is strongly preferred. Knowledge of EPIC medical record system is strongly preferred as BHRS is planning to transition to EPIC in the next 1–2 years. Responsibilities Lead integrated care for clients with serious mental illness and co‑occurring conditions. Provide direct services to adult clients. Supervise and clinically consult other physicians in evaluating and treating BHRS clients. Plan, teach, mentor, and supervise adult psychiatric residents and oversee Graduate Medical Education. Conduct quality improvement activities, including reviews of hospital admissions, higher‑level‑of‑care requests, and research proposals. Facilitate information technology activities including electronic medical record support. Co‑chair the BHRS Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and support pharmacy services. Assist the Medical Director with health‑plan negotiations, regulatory compliance, and fiscal activities. Assume the duties of the Medical Director in his/her absence. Other duties as assigned. Member of the Residency Training Committee and its selection and evaluation process. Regularly meet with the BHRS Medical Director. Help review grievances concerning psychiatrists at Central County and Coastside. Review and approve timecards and coordinate psychiatric coverage. Organize and facilitate meetings with psychiatrists, conduct individual supervision, approve timecards/expenses, and perform performance evaluations. Education and Experience Completion of a residency program in Adult Psychiatry and three years of experience supervising psychiatrists and/or psychiatry residents. Licensure / Certification License to practice medicine or osteopathy in the State of California. Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Knowledge Health‑care management practices and principles including revenue retrieval. Current developments, trends, and research in relevant medical specialties. Principles and practices of supervision. Development of medical policies, procedures, and protocols. Preparation of comprehensive reports and correspondence. Pharmacology and psychopharmacology, including laws regarding informed consent, dosage ranges, drug incompatibilities, and side effects. Laws, statutes, codes, and regulations related to the specialty area, graduate medical education, JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. General Medicine and its relationship to psychiatry. Current techniques in individual, couple, family, adult, and group psychotherapy. Chemical dependency and abuse and its relationship to psychiatry. Advanced knowledge of psychiatric principles and practices. Current developments in psychiatry. Community mental health practice and program options. Treatment approaches and differential diagnosis of the mentally ill. County‑wide mental health services. Skills / Abilities Direct psychiatric program management. Clinical supervision and lead direction to medical/professional staff, including physicians and non‑physicians. Full supervision of staff, including selection, performance evaluation, and corrective action. Preparation of comprehensive reports and correspondence. Application of effective management techniques. Diagnosis and treatment of patients in the designated specialty area. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, families, hospitals, community organizations, and others. Effective oral and written communication with individuals at all levels within the County and Health Services Department.
