Bus Driver

Bus Drivers are responsible for transporting students to and from school in a safe and timely manner.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

• Transporting students of all ages to and from school and extra-curricular activities in a safe and timely manner.
• Following bus routes as written and approved by the Director of Transportation.
• Managing student behavior and maintaining discipline on the bus.
• Keeping two-way radio on at all times that the bus is in operation.
• Assisting administrative personnel, teachers, and parents in promoting a positive relationship between the school, students and parents.
• Conducting and logging pre-trip inspections to check for cleanliness, safety, proper mechanical functions and adequate fuel level.
• Conducting trip inspections after each run to check for vandalism, cleanliness, lost articles and sleeping children.
• Observing rules, regulations and responsibilities affecting bus drivers contained in the Board policies and Transportation Handbook.
• Conducting safety inspections of the bus as defined by the Transportation Handbook and the Director of Transportation.
• Attending meetings in accordance with departmental requirements.
• Completing all required forms completely and promptly.
• Enforcing Transportation Handbook rules and Board of Education policies for safe bus riding.
• Reporting any traffic violations observed to the Transportation Director.
• Reporting changes in route conditions to the Transportation Director as soon as possible.
• Maintaining a good record of attendance.
• Maintaining the confidentiality of students' discipline and medical records.
• Keeping the bus clean.
• Performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
• Following planned route on a time schedule.
• Reporting accidents immediately.
• Following ALL traffic laws, safety procedures, and transportation expectations.

Supervisory duties include supervising students while on the bus.

Skills and abilities include:

• Reading and comprehending bus routes, simple instructions, short correspondence and memos written in English.
• Communicating verbally in a clear and concise manner of the two-way radio.
• Writing simple correspondence.
• Communicating one on one and in small groups.
• Maintaining appropriate relationships with coworkers, parents and students.
• Ability to compute mathematic problems as needed in the maintenance department.
• Comprehending and following detailed but basic written or oral instructions.
• Solving simple problems with few variables in stable conditions.

Physical demands include:

• Frequently walking short distances.
• Frequently climbing up and down stairs.
• Able to assist students off and on the school bus as needed.
• Able to quickly evacuate children from a school bus in emergency situations.
• Requires bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling and mobility.
• Able to lift up to fifty pounds to shoulder height.
• Use close, distance and peripheral vision.
• Able to hear to drive school bus while children are on board.

Attendance: Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

Evaluation: Annual formative and summative evaluation conducted by the board of education.
