Duties

Plans and develops programs and policies to provide transfusion medicine support to the Medical Center and other DOD medical facilities in the supported regional geographic areas.

Monitors special needs of patients when indicated to include irradiation, leukocyte depletion, CMV/negative products or antigen negative products, and ensures availability of special components.

Maintains an in-service schedule. Serves as a consultant and advisor to physicians, nurses, federal, state and other health care providers on various aspects of transfusion service management and testing.

Provides consultation and interpretation of results to department chiefs, physicians, subordinate supervisors and other clinical staff members.

Ensures the operation of an effective system of internal process controls and validation measures in accordance with mandated FDA current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs) by developing, revising and administering a Quality Program.

Plans, conducts, and reviews quality control and quality assurance procedures of the section. Establishes quality control and preventive maintenance for all instruments and procedures.

Prepares or assists in preparation of recurring or special blood utilization and transfusion service workload reports; presents data to facility Blood Utilization committee meeting.

Coordinates capital equipment acquisitions, compares new methods with existing or reference method by accepted procedures and statistical analysis to include cost convenience, efficiency and productivity.
