NY / NJ Major Bridges Leader

The NY/NJ Major Bridges Leader will oversee and coordinate multi‑disciplined bridge projects, ensuring technical excellence, client satisfaction, and adherence to HDR standards. The role involves managing design teams, performing complex structural analysis, and serving as a technical mentor while driving the growth of HDR’s Bridge program. Primary duties of the NY/NJ Major Bridges Leader include: Planning, directing, and monitoring all aspects of multi‑disciplinary bridge projects, including those with high technical complexity. Providing technical oversight and coordination of several projects concurrently. Participating in design and production of schematic, design development, and contract documents in collaboration with Project Managers and other disciplines. Ensuring deliverables and documentation are complete, understandable, and conform to HDR and industry requirements. Leading complex structural planning, analysis, and design for transportation projects such as suspension, cable stay, arch, segmental, extradosed, steel, and prestressed concrete bridges. Serving as a technical specialist, supervising junior and mid‑level engineers, and mentoring less experienced bridge designers. Developing QA/QC procedures and reviewing bridge plans for complex projects. Managing the implementation of emerging technologies to advance bridge design capabilities. Participating in the selection of key staff nationally and globally, and identifying strategic hires. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or a closely related field. 10 years of experience in bridge design and project management. A professional engineering registration with ongoing commitment to quality and HDR values. Experience developing and managing diverse teams. Ability to work cooperatively with business leaders, operations managers, and marketing managers. Strong communication, leadership, planning, and mentoring skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite. Technical proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Rhino, Revit, MicroStation, Larsa4D Bridge Plus, SAP2000, FB MultiPier, and Leap Bridge Enterprise. Experience with large regional clients such as MTA, NYSDOT, NJDOT, and NY State Bridge Authority. Experience with rail, pedestrian, and trail/bike bridge projects. Experience preparing project scope, fee, and schedule. Involvement in industry organizations, technical conferences, and professional associations. Preference for candidates residing in the NY/NJ area. Preferred Qualifications BS or MS in Structural Engineering or closely related field. New York or New Jersey PE license strongly preferred; PE licensure in other states highly desirable. SE license desirable. 15+ years of project and client management experience with significant project leadership. Experience with Design Build, Progressive Design Build, and P3 delivery models. Experience with MTA, NYSDOT, NJDOT, NY State Bridge Authority, NJ Turnpike Authority, Port Authority of NY & NJ, Massachusetts DOT, and other major regional clients. Experience with signature bridge projects. Experience in pursuits for bridge‑centered projects. Experience in bridge parametric modeling and design. Experience in preparing project scope, fee, and schedule. Active participation in industry organizations, technical conferences, and professional associations. Compensation range for this position is $181,000–$264,375 (New York City).
