Job Title: Maintenance Engineer/Automotive Welder - up to $30/hr

This role focuses on installing and wiring low-voltage electrical systems and mechanical equipment on truck bodies, including dump bodies, plow equipment, and ice management systems. You will work in a busy shop environment, using a broad range of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fabrication skills to assemble, install, and troubleshoot specialized equipment.

Responsibilities

• Install wiring for low-voltage electrical systems that operate lights and equipment on truck bodies.
• Use a basic mechanics tool set and electrical tools such as cutters, strippers, crimpers, and soldering iron or gun to perform daily tasks.
• Apply knowledge of 12V automotive electrical systems, including automotive circuits, emergency lighting, relays, fusing and amperage ratings, wire gauge ratings, wire testing, and wire management.
• Troubleshoot electrical issues in automotive-style systems and ensure proper operation of installed equipment.
• Perform custom fabrication for component mounting, using tools such as manual brake press, punch press, ironworker, saws, drills, and plasma cutters.
• Install and wire two-way radios and similar low-voltage equipment; experience with car alarms or remote start systems is a plus.
• Install dump bodies, plow mounts, plow equipment, and ice management bodies onto truck chassis in the Heavy Bay area.
• Carry out mechanical installation tasks including mounting dump boxes, plow equipment, and ice management systems on truck bodies.
• Assist with mechanical assembly of subassemblies to be installed on equipment and truck bodies.
• Install hydraulic systems that operate dump bodies, plows, and ice management equipment, including assembling hydraulic hoses, fittings, and components.
• Use larger diesel-mechanic-type wrenches and sockets to work with hydraulic fittings and related hardware.
• Wire low-voltage control systems to operate installed equipment, ensuring proper routing, protection, and labeling of wiring.
• Read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and drawings to guide installation and assembly work.
• Follow shop safety procedures and maintain an organized work area and toolbox.
• Collaborate with other team members in the shop to complete installations efficiently and meet production goals.
• Maintain strong attendance and a positive, team-oriented attitude while working extended hours as required.

Essential Skills

• Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform installation and assembly work.
• Minimum 1 year of mechanical assembly or installation experience.
• Minimum 1 year of welding experience (does not need to be production or regular welding).
• Minimum 1 year of hydraulic, electrical, or mechanical assembly or installation experience.
• Experience wiring automotive systems and/or control panels.
• Ability to wire low-voltage systems to control equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and drawings.
• Knowledge of 12V automotive electrical systems, including circuits, lighting, relays, fusing and amperage ratings, wire gauge ratings, and wire testing.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical and mechanical issues.
• Strong attendance record and reliable work habits.
• Positive attitude and willingness to work collaboratively in a shop environment.
• Ownership of a rolling toolbox with a basic mechanics tool set, including hand tools and basic air, power, and battery tools.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with emergency-type automotive lighting systems.
• Experience with wire management practices, including routing, securing, and protecting wiring.
• Experience with custom fabrication for component mounting.
• Familiarity with two-way radio installation.
• Experience with car alarm or remote start systems is a plus.
• Experience using fabrication equipment such as manual brake press, punch press, ironworker, saws, drills, and plasma cutters.
• Experience with welding in a shop or industrial environment.
• Comfort working with larger diesel-mechanic-sized wrenches and sockets for hydraulic fittings.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and production schedules in a busy shop setting.

Work Environment

This position is based in a busy shop environment where diesel trucks regularly drive in and out, resulting in some exposure to fumes. Approximately 20 people work in the shop at any given time, creating a collaborative and hands-on atmosphere. The role is on first shift, typically running from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with Saturday shifts at the same hours. Saturdays are currently mandatory, and total weekly hours average between 50 and 55, offering substantial overtime. Work involves frequent use of hand tools, air tools, power tools, and battery-operated tools, as well as fabrication and welding equipment. Employees are expected to dress appropriately for a shop setting, suitable for working around heavy trucks, fabrication machinery, and hydraulic and electrical systems.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
