Police Officer - Academy Attendee

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Galt is accepting applications for Police Officer Academy Attendee. This is an entry‑level, non‑sworn position. Incumbents are assigned to or are currently attending a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy and must satisfactorily pass all requirements that lead to the possession of the P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate, in addition to passing all phases of the background process. Appointment to a sworn Police Officer position is contingent upon successful completion of the academy and background process, followed by final review by the Police Chief. Eligibility: Applicants must be currently enrolled in a California Post Basic Police Academy and provide a letter of good standing.

COMPENSATION

Hourly rate: $29.06 per hour upon satisfactory graduation from the P.O.S.T. Basic Course Police Academy. Successful graduates will be promoted to Police Officer with an hourly rate of $39.33 to $48.29 and may earn up to an additional 10% education incentive. 2025 Salary: $29.06 ($60,444.80 annually) 2026 Salary: $29.35 ($61,048 annually)

ADDITIONAL PAY (ONCE ASSIGNED AND ELIGIBLE)

Overtime – Paid at time and one‑half (1‑1/2). Bilingual pay – $100 per month. Post Certificate and Education Incentive Pay – 5 % to 10 %. Canine Handler – 36.75 % of base pay. Field Training Officer (FTO) – 5 %. Longevity Pay – Beginning at 8 years of service 2.5 %, 10 years 5 %, 12 years 7.5 %. Medical‑in‑lieu – Employees who waive medical coverage shall receive $200 per month (employee only), $350 per month (employee plus one), and $500 per month (family).

BENEFITS

Home Buying Program – $25,000 interest‑free loan to assist with the purchase of a home within Galt city limits. Tuition reimbursement – up to $4,000 per fiscal year. Holiday pay – 14 holidays; shift personnel holiday in lieu pay equal to 9.33 hours of pay each month. Vacation leave – 80 hours per year for the first 4 years of service, 120 hours after 4 years, 160 hours after 10 years, 200 hours after 15 years, and 240 hours after 22 years. Vacation credit – Those with 4+ years of prior public agency experience may request accrual at 120 hours. Vacation cash out – Eligible employees may cash out up to 80 hours per year. Sick leave – 96 hours per year. Health insurance – City pays a generous portion of the CalPERS medical premium (10 options). City pays 100 % for dental and vision premiums. Life insurance – City pays $50,000 policy and $1,500 policy for dependents. Health Reimbursement Arrangement – City contributes $100 per month. Long‑term disability – City paid policy‑benefit up to 60 % of base salary. EAP – Confidential employee assistance plan. Wellness program – Access to peer support, newly updated gym, and on‑duty workout time. Uniforms – All uniforms, equipment, and dry cleaning fees are paid for by the department. Public safety family counseling – For Police Department personnel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be willing to work evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts; must pass a detailed background investigation and work with exposure to difficult circumstances, including hazardous materials and all weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must maintain P.O.S.T. physical standards, including mobility, physical strength and stamina to respond to emergency situations and apprehend suspects, lift and move individuals or objects weighing up to 100 pounds; ability to work in a standard office setting and operate a motor vehicle; vision to maintain firearms qualification, read printed materials and computer screen, discern colors and work in a night setting; hearing and speech to communicate before groups, in person and over the telephone and radio.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Attend and successfully complete the P.O.S.T. Basic Academy approved by the City of Galt. Successfully learn both academic and physical (defensive tactics, firearm, driving, etc.) requirements of the position. Attend any other related training. Control traffic flow and enforce state laws and local municipal codes, violations, and traffic regulations. Perform investigative work. Participate in and provide support and assistance to special crime prevention and enforcement programs. Operate a standard vehicle to travel to multiple locations to perform assigned tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation equivalency. Must provide verification of POST PELLETB T‑score of 42 or above at time of application. Must currently be enrolled in a POST Academy and provide a letter of good standing. Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record. Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment to sworn Police Officer position. Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien eligible for citizenship and have applied for it before applying to this position. Must successfully complete a background investigation, which includes polygraph, psychological exams and fingerprint clearance.
