Laboratory Supervisor Microbiology

Under general supervision, the Laboratory Supervisor-Microbiology, oversees the operation of the Microbiology Laboratory in order to provide efficient, high quality, cost-effective laboratory service. The Supervisor shares responsibility for the following aspects of the Microbiology Laboratory: Financial performance, human resource management, materials management, continuous improvement, customer service and quality assurance.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or the equivalent education, training and experience as defined by the regulations of CLIA.

Experience

4 years of progressively more responsible related work experience in Microbiology, after

degree completion

Skills

• Skill in oral and written communication, investigation, data analysis and problem solving
• Skill in basic computers and personal productivity applications
• Ability to prioritize work, organize and transfer numbers or data accurately and meet deadlines
• Able to operate and maintain basic laboratory equipment

Licensures, Certifications

• Certification by a recognized certifying agency defining a minimum level of general knowledge in medical technology or specialized knowledge in the laboratory supervised. Specialist in Microbiology preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Manual dexterity, good visual acuity, including color perception.
• Able to stand or sit for long periods of time
• Some heavy lifting.

Working Conditions

• Exposure to hazardous chemicals, reagents, and highly infectious materials. Subject to unpleasant odors and fumes.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Reviews results for accuracy and validity.

• Performs technical duties (bench work) as required by staffing and workload.
• Develops, recommends and implements protocols for appropriate technical procedures that produce laboratory data in an optimal, cost-effective manner with accuracy and validity.
• Ensures compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.
• Facilitates specific functions within the department, such as QA/QC programs, test selection and utilization, and research procedures. Ensures that quality and quantity standards are achieved.
• Maintains a safe, clean environment following universal precautions to minimize or prevent employee exposures to ensure positive patient outcomes, including: accountability for risk management, infection control, policy and procedure development activities, with supporting documentation.
• Facilitates the evaluation of instrumentation, procedures and supplies, obtains cost comparison and provides recommendations for purchase. Facilitates the charging, ordering and maintaining supplies and inventory. Develops operator maintenance schedules for equipment used to ensure that equipment is in optimal working order, with proper documentation; prevents loss or abuse of equipment.
• Manages all personnel matters, including hiring, training, development, performance management, etc.
• Interfaces with LIS or MIS to maintain appropriate systems to improve Department functions including operations, documentation, supply maintenance and financial reporting.
• Evaluates sample and test work flow for efficiency and productivity and makes or recommends appropriate changes consistent with laboratory or department budget and goals.
• Prepares budgets. Prepares cost and productivity analysis by monitoring and reporting budget variance, monthly workload, personnel hours’ variance and takes action to correct variance.

Pay Range

$74,965.56 - $127,441.45

Final salary offer will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience and alignment with our organizational needs.
