The Fire Alarm Designer will develop accurate, code-compliant fire alarm shop drawings, submittal packages, calculations, and related project documentation for commercial and residential projects throughout New York City. The ideal candidate has at least five years of hands‑on fire alarm design experience, strong AutoCAD skills, practical knowledge of NYC/FDNY requirements, and experience with Notifier fire alarm systems. NICET Level II certification in Fire Alarm Systems is required. This is an in‑office position; the successful candidate must be able to commute reliably to our Long Island City office. Essential Responsibilities Prepare complete, accurate, and coordinated fire alarm shop drawings, including floor plans, device layouts, riser diagrams, wiring diagrams, details, legends, and installation notes. Design fire alarm and life‑safety systems in accordance with applicable codes, project specifications, manufacturer requirements, and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements. Review architectural, electrical, mechanical, sprinkler, and other trade drawings to identify design requirements, coordination conflicts, and required system interfaces. Develop permit and construction submittal packages, including product data, calculations, bills of material, sequences of operation, scope narratives, and related documentation. Perform or support battery calculations, voltage‑drop calculations, notification appliance circuit calculations, power‑supply sizing, and other required design calculations. Select and lay out appropriate initiating devices, notification appliances, control panels, annunciators, power supplies, modules, relays, and interface devices. Prepare designs for new construction, tenant fit‑outs, renovations, retrofit work, system expansions, and existing‑building modifications. Coordinate fire alarm design with project managers, estimators, field supervisors, technicians, installers, electricians, general contractors, consultants, and client representatives. Participate in project kickoff and turnover meetings to confirm scope, schedule, drawings, specifications, system requirements, and deliverable dates. Address design comments, revise drawings promptly, and respond to questions from project teams, consultants, clients, and AHJs. Maintain orderly design records, drawing revision logs, submittal files, equipment lists, and as‑built documentation. Conduct site visits as needed to verify existing conditions, collect field information, resolve installation issues, and support accurate as‑built drawings. Provide technical support to installation, programming, testing, commissioning, inspection, and closeout teams. Identify potential code, constructability, coordination, material, or schedule issues early and escalte them to Engineering or Project Management. Support continuous improvement of engineering standards, drawing templates, design checklists, and quality- control processes. Required Qualifications Minimum of five (5) years of fire alarm system design, CAD drafting, engineering support, or closely related fire alarm experience. NICET Level II certification in Fire Alarm Systems. Demonstrated ability to independently produce fire alarm shop drawings and submittal packages. Strong proficiency in AutoCAD; ability to create, revise, and manage detailed multi-sheet construction drawing sets. Working knowledge of Notifier fire alarm systems is strongly preferred, including panels, initiating devices, notification appliances, modules, power supplies, and system architecture. Working knowledge of fire alarm design principles, device placement, circuiting, system interfaces, notification requirements, and construction documentation. Knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NFPA 72, NFPA 70/NEC, New York City Building Code, New York City Fire Code, and FDNY requirements. Experience preparing or reviewing battery calculations, voltage‑drop calculations, equipment schedules, bills of material, and product‑data submittals. Ability to read and interpret architectural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, sprinkler, and structural drawings and specifications. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, time‑management ability, and commitment to producing accurate work under project deadlines. Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with office and field personnel. Ability to commute reliably to client's Long Island City, New York office and work primarily in an in‑office environment. Authorization to work in the United States. Preferred Qualifications Experience designing fire alarm systems for projects within the five boroughs of New York City. Familiarity with FDNY filing, plan‑review, inspection, sign‑off, and closeout requirements. Experience with Notifier by Honeywell product lines and design tools. Experience with additional fire alarm platforms, including Edwards/EST, Siemens, Simplex, Gamewell‑FCI, or Silent Knight. Experience with Revit, Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft Office, and construction/project‑management software. Knowledge of emergency communication systems, voice evacuation, smoke‑control interfaces, elevator recall, HVAC shutdown, sprinkler supervisory/monitoring, and central‑station monitoring interfaces. NICET Level III certification in Fire Alarm Systems or progress toward Level III. Associate's or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, fire protection engineering, construction technology, drafting/design, or a related technical discipline. Work Environment And Physical Requirements Primarily office‑based work using computer‑aided design and project‑documentation software. Periodic travel to customer sites and active construction projects in the New York City metropolitan area may be required.
