Traffic & Shipping Supervisor

Salary Range: $56,700 – $94,600

Job Summary

The Traffic & Shipping Supervisor oversees the safe, accurate, and timely movement of finished goods from production through shipment. This position leads shipping and traffic operations in a high-volume, 24/7 manufacturing environment, coordinating personnel, transportation, inventory, documentation, and dock activities to meet customer delivery requirements.

The Supervisor works closely with Production, Inventory, Customer Service, Quality, Maintenance, and transportation providers to ensure products are properly packaged, accurately documented, and shipped on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Personnel Management

  • Lead and direct shipping personnel across multiple shifts and ensure appropriate staffing and coverage.
  • Assign daily work based on production schedules, shipping requirements, and operational priorities.
  • Monitor attendance, timekeeping, overtime, productivity, and employee performance.
  • Train, coach, and develop employees and administer corrective action when necessary.
  • Maintain effective communication and handoffs between shifts.

Traffic & Shipping Operations

  • Coordinate daily truck scheduling, carrier pickups, and delivery requirements.
  • Work with freight carriers to maximize trailer utilization while maintaining required shipping sequences.
  • Oversee the pulling, staging, packaging, palletizing, crating, and loading of finished products.
  • Ensure products are properly secured and protected to minimize damage during transportation.
  • Coordinate with Production and Inventory when schedules, priorities, or product availability change.
  • Resolve shipping delays, shortages, misloads, and other issues that may impact customer deliveries.

Documentation & Inventory

  • Ensure accurate completion and review of Bills of Lading, packing slips, ASNs, load sheets, and other shipping documentation.
  • Maintain accurate finished goods inventory through cycle counts, physical inventories, and timely ERP transactions.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies between physical inventory, system records, and shipping documentation.

Quality & Customer Service

  • Verify finished products are properly packaged and in acceptable condition prior to shipment.
  • Address shipping-related damage, shortages, and order discrepancies in partnership with appropriate departments.
  • Support efforts to improve on-time delivery, shipping accuracy, product quality, and customer satisfaction.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and enforce compliance with company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
  • Ensure employees follow required PPE, forklift safety, lockout/tagout, hazard communication, and material-handling procedures.
  • Conduct or participate in safety inspections and address unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Ensure shipping equipment, docks, and work areas are maintained in a safe and orderly condition.

Performance & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor shipping performance, inventory accuracy, freight utilization, damages, overtime, and productivity.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and eliminate recurring shipping issues.
  • Communicate operational concerns and performance to plant leadership.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in shipping, receiving, warehouse, logistics, or traffic operations, with at least 1 year of supervisory or leadership experience; manufacturing experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree preferred.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing or distribution environment.
  • Working knowledge of transportation scheduling, freight operations, inventory control, and shipping documentation.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems such as SAP, IFS, or similar systems.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound decisions in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and work throughout a manufacturing and warehouse environment.
  • Ability to lift and/or move materials weighing up to 50–60 pounds independently when required.
  • Ability to work around forklifts, trucks, trailers, and other industrial equipment.
  • Ability to work in non-climate-controlled areas with exposure to wood dust, industrial noise, and varying temperatures.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE.

Work Schedule

This position supports a 24-hour, 7-day manufacturing operation and is primarily assigned to the day shift and the work is onsite. Flexibility is required to support operational needs, including occasional weekend, holiday, off-shift work, and emergency call-ins.

Working Conditions

Fast-paced manufacturing and warehouse environment with exposure to wood dust, industrial noise, moving equipment, truck traffic, and varying temperatures. Appropriate PPE and adherence to all safety procedures are required.
