Building Porter

The primary purpose of this position is to maintain assigned buildings, grounds, and related equipment in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. The Building Porter performs routine cleaning, groundskeeping, and maintenance duties to support the daily operations of HACP residential and administrative properties. All activities must support the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh ("HACP" or "Authority") mission, strategic goals, and objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The position duties and responsibilities listed below describe the general nature and scope of work. Other responsibilities, duties, and skills may be required and assigned.

• Performs general cleaning and upkeep of all interior and exterior common areas, including community rooms, elevators, lobbies, stairwells, hallways, garbage areas, sidewalks, entryways, parking areas, maintenance shops, storage areas, assigned offices, and trash pickup locations.
• Maintains the cleanliness and sanitation of vacant units in preparation for occupancy.
• Moves appliances in and out of vacant units as needed for turnover preparation and inspects common areas and vacant units to identify needed maintenance and repairs.
• Visually inspects assigned work areas, removes obstacles to safe passage, and ensures adequate lighting is maintained.
• Performs lawn and landscaping care, including trash removal, grass cutting, hedge trimming, leaf raking, snow shoveling, and salt application to walkways and entrances to ensure tenant and staff safety in all weather conditions.
• Performs basic maintenance and repair tasks, including but not limited to painting, patching, plastering, laying floor tiles, replacing hardware and lightbulbs, installing smoke detectors, and other general upkeep tasks.
• Performs preventive maintenance on mechanical systems, appliances, and equipment as assigned.
• Responds promptly to maintenance service requests, documents work completed, and remains available for after-hours emergencies.
• Reports vandalism and damaged or missing lighting, smoke detectors, or fire extinguishers promptly to management.
• Maintains inventory of janitorial and maintenance supplies and equipment, and notifies management when restocking or equipment replacement is needed.
• Provides courteous assistance to residents and visitors while on site.
• Works cooperatively with maintenance staff, contractors, and management to meet property needs.
• Assists with special projects, building events, and emergency tasks as assigned.

Education, Certifications, Licensing, and Experience

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in housekeeping, custodial work, or experience in general maintenance.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable under the Authority's plan.

ADA and Other Requirements

Positions in this class typically require grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting 50 pounds or more of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily on Authority properties and may expose the employee to a range of temperatures and weather conditions. The noise level may be loud, and the environment may be more hazardous than a standard office environment.
