As a Scientist I, Research in Phillips 66's Energy Research & Innovation organization, specializing in Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry, you'll help turn scientific investigation into practical analytical solutions that support our businesses and a changing energy landscape. Based at the Phillips 66 Research Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, you'll work alongside scientists, laboratory technicians, and technical partners in a collaborative environment with access to advanced laboratory capabilities, including Gas Chromatography, Liquid Chromatography, and Mass Spectrometry instrumentation. What You'll Do

  • Conduct research using primary data sources, chromatography and mass spectrometry data, and other analytical techniques, analyze trends and relationships, and identify insights that help answer technical questions.
  • Plan and execute scientific experiments and tests using established research methods, Gas Chromatography, Liquid Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, and other analytical tools and software, translating results into practical applications and solutions for the business.
  • Develop analytical research specifications, hypotheses, experimental designs, and supporting materials while labeling, tracking, and managing samples, including characterizing unknown materials to help solve complex operational challenges.
  • Use research databases, scientific software, laboratory equipment interfaces, and analytical techniques to collect, cleanse, model, and interpret data.
  • Apply data-quality controls and research quality practices, including ASTM methods and Quality Management Systems, identify noncompliance or process bottlenecks, and recommend improvements or adjustments when needed.
  • Prepare clear reports and data visualizations for technical and business audiences, communicate experimental results and analytical method development through technical presentations, and review reports prepared by others.
  • Deliver small project workstreams within defined time, quality, and safety parameters while monitoring milestones, resources, and deadlines.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies, relevant regulations, and industry practices, and contribute to evaluations of their potential value to Phillips 66.
  • Partner with researchers, operations, laboratory technicians, and other stakeholders to resolve questions, align expectations, and support business cases, while maintaining strong working relationships with laboratory technicians to ensure successful execution of laboratory work.
What You'll Bring - Required

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, or a closely related science or engineering discipline
  • 2 or more years of hands-on experience in Chromatography and/or Mass Spectrometry techniques
  • 2 or more years of experience in experimental design, conducting innovative experiments and method development, and translating results into practical solutions
What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred

  • Demonstrated strong and proactive approach to safety
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience working in a collaborative team environment
  • Experience in energy, oil and gas, laboratory research, or analytical solutions
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems, scientific databases, or analytical reporting tools
  • Experience coordinating technical projects or contributing to cross-functional technical work
  • Experience identifying process improvements and translating technical findings into practical recommendations
  • Master's degree in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, or a closely related science or engineering discipline
  • Five or more years of hands-on experience in Chromatography and/or Mass Spectrometry techniques
  • Five or more years of experience in experimental design, conducting innovative experiments and method development, and translating results into practical solutions
  • Five or more years of experience with ASTM methods and Quality Assurance programs
  • Technical knowledge and hands-on experience with Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography, Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis, Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry and Ion Chromatography
Compensation Range


This position has a base salary range of $108,900 - $133,100.

Where a candidate offer falls within the posted range depends on the candidate's experience, skills, and alignment with the role's requirements.
