A Sleep Technologist Scorer works under the general supervision of the Sleep Center Manager, medical director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and home sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and comprehensive patient care. The Sleep Technologist Scorer is responsible for accurately scoring sleep studies and analyzing physiological data to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. This role requires expertise in polysomnography techniques, proficiency in sleep staging and event scoring, and adherence to industry standards and protocols.
Responsibilities:
- Under the general supervision of the Sleep lab Manager and the Medical Director or the Medical Director's designee, the Sleep Technologist Scorer performs scoring of sleep testing raw data
- Score sleep studies according to the most current AASM Scoring Manual Version.
- Analyze physiological data obtained from various monitoring devices, including EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, respiratory signals, and oximetry, to identify sleep stages, respiratory events, and other abnormalities.
- Interpret sleep architecture and patterns, including sleep staging, arousal frequency, sleep efficiency, and REM latency, to assist in the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders.
- Maintain accurate documentation of scoring results, patient demographics, and clinical observations in electronic medical records (EMR) or other designated systems.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and quality assurance protocols related to polysomnographic testing and scoring.
- Assist with troubleshooting technical issues related to sleep monitoring equipment and software systems and communicate with vendors or technical support as necessary.
- Participate in departmental meetings, case conferences, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and workflow efficiency.
- Accurately score assigned sleep studies in designated timeframes appropriate to test type.
- Score all sleep records using all RECOMMENDED events (sleep staging, arousals, PLMs, respiratory events) as well as according to the guidelines set forth in the most current AASM scoring manual within 24 calendar hours (barring any technical or data entry issues) of receipt of complete sleep study.
- Maintain proficiency in technical knowledge required to perform various acquisition platform scoring duties.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures.
- Train Polysomnographic new hire and trainee scorers under guidelines set forth by Connecticut Children's Medical Center and associated accrediting agencies and partners.
- Submit all required documents and fees to the state agency responsible for issuing
- Obtain/maintain Polysomnographic licenses in a timeframe that will prevent a lapse in licensure. Obtain and manage continuing education credits according to accrediting agency's standard.
- Maintain reliable home internet connection and ability to effectively communicate with all team members through email
AASM Standards of Practice
- All scorers will comply with applicable standards of the current version of the AASM's Facility Standards for Accreditation.
- All scorers must maintain proper credentialing. Specifically, the scorer will either maintain one of the following credentials: RST, RPSGT, CPSGT, CRT-SDS or RRT-SDS, or score only under the supervision of one of the above and either be enrolled in or have completed a polysomnographic educational program outlined in the current version of the AASM's Facility Standards for Accreditation.
- Scorers will score each epoch of each PSG for sleep staging, arousals, respiratory events, and limb movement in accordance with the current version of AASM Scoring Manual.
- Computer-assisted scoring must be reviewed, epoch-by-epoch, and edited by scorers in compliance with the current version of AASM Scoring Manual.
- All scorers are required to participate in an AASM compliant Interscorer Reliability Program.
- All scoring will be performed in accordance with the recommendation and requirements set forth in the current version of AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events

- Review and evaluate Sleep studies to provide direct educational feedback to assist Coordinators
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Required:
- Education Required: High School Diploma
- Education Preferred: 2 years college preferred.
- Experience Required:
- Experience scoring in lab studies or home sleep studies, with knowledge of all the current AASM rules and regulations.
- Experience Preferred:
- Healthcare and Pediatric experience a plus.
- Maintain 30 CEUs in 36 month rolling period
- RT/CRT experience is a plus
License and/or Certification Required:
- Current credentials as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) in good standing through the Board of Registered Polysomnography Technologists. a RT or CRT Sleep Disorders Specialty as well as complying with all certification requirements. RPSGT, CPSGT, SDS
