Parks and Recreation Facilities Maintenance Supervisor

DEPARTMENT: PARKS AND RECREATION

HOURS: 7:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday-Friday, typically. Due to the nature of operations.

REPORTS TO: PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Parks and Recreation, the Field Maintenance Supervisor will be responsible for performing a variety of skilled tasks related to the maintenance of recreational facilities, athletic fields, and park grounds within the City.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Maintain the welcoming appearance of all recreational facilities and parks as it pertains to groundskeeping and maintenance, landscaping, facilities maintenance, etc.
• Lead a maintenance crew and provide training, guidance, and work direction, in addition to performing a variety of grounds, facilities, and park maintenance work.
• Operate, service, and maintain a variety of grounds and facilities maintenance equipment, tools, and machinery, including lawn mowers, sprayers, chainsaws, power sprayers, edgers, trucks, trailers, and other ground maintenance equipment and hand tools, etc.
• Maintains turf and all areas by mowing, trimming, edging, fertilizing, aerating, seeding, sodding, irrigation, topdressing, grading, dragging, and removal of trash.
• Mixes and applies fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers and can recognize common plants and turf problems.
• Perform and oversee the spraying of insecticides, herbicides, and other types of sprays on athletic fields, fences, trees, hedges, garden areas, and other interior locations as directed.
• Performs field set-up, installing bases and pitching mounds, lining, and general maintenance for all types of athletic fields to conform with standard rules and dimensions for each sport, and has knowledge of materials and methods used.
• Complete and review work orders, write and submit reports, keep records, and report any irregularities to the Supervisor.
• Maintain, repair, and program irrigation systems.
• Install, maintain, and repair fences.
• Maintain and repair docks
• Coordinate work, service, and repairs with vendors, as needed.
• Check, inspect, and maintain department vehicles and equipment.
• Organize, monitor, and maintain inventory and records.
• Perform supervisory duties such as reviewing timesheets, verifying the quality of work, ensuring that safety precautions are followed, training employees, conducting performance evaluations, transporting workers to facilities, etc.
• Responds to emergencies.
• Open and close park gates and restrooms and prepare fields for use.
• Assist departments, move, and set up facility functions requiring moving tables, bleachers, and chairs for concerts and special events.
• Work with all departments and staff to set up and maintain facilities during sporting events, community events, parades, and festivals, etc.
• Prepare an annual maintenance budget and implement spending.
• Complete projects as needed, such as tree removal, banner placement, fence repair, pier repair, etc.
• Perform all other related duties as assigned and required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Ability to maintain a pleasant and courteous demeanor while working with and for the general public.
• Ability to deal with routine matters independently.
• Knowledge of basic methods, hand tools, materials, equipment, and practices of routine groundskeeping work, etc.
• Knowledge of operation, use, and maintenance of grounds equipment.
• Experienced in basic principles of leadership, training, and providing direction to others.
• Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of various sports and recreational programs.
• Basic knowledge of painting, carpentry, plumbing, and minor electrical.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be a graduate from an accredited high school or hold a certificate of high school equivalency (GED).
• Must have 3 to 5 years of supervisory experience in ground maintenance work, preferably in turf and landscape maintenance, sports turf maintenance, and grounds maintenance equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must possess a valid Alabama driver's license and a driving record suitable for insurability.
• Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position. The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, including digging, shoveling, planting, trimming, climbing, lifting heavy objects, crouching, and crawling.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
• Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals and obtain sprayer certification within one year.
• Must be willing to work non-standard hours, which may include evenings and weekends.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work involves frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Employees may be required to lift and carry heavy objects, operate equipment for extended periods, and work in outdoor environments exposed to heat, cold, rain, noise, dust, and traffic hazards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed outdoors and may involve exposure to moving traffic, heavy equipment, loud noise, fumes, dust, hazardous materials, and adverse weather conditions.
