Associate Director/Director, Accounting

The Associate Director, Accounting or Director, Accounting is a key member of BlossomHill’s accounting and finance organization and will play a hands-on role in the Company’s public-company accounting, financial reporting and close processes. The position is responsible for leading and supporting core accounting operations, including the monthly and quarterly close, general ledger, payroll oversight, equity administration and stock-based compensation, R&D and clinical accruals, and internal controls. 

The successful candidate will combine strong technical accounting and operational skills with a collaborative, improvement-oriented approach and a demonstrated ability to mentor and develop team members.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead key aspects of the monthly, quarterly and annual close processes, including review of journal entries, account reconciliations, financial statement fluctuations and supporting schedules, while ensuring timely and accurate completion of close activities.
• Support equity administration activities and the accounting for stock-based compensation, including equity award activity; partner with third-party equity administrators to maintain accurate equity records and reporting.
• Support payroll accounting and related close activities, including review of payroll reconciliations, accruals, employee-related liabilities and coordination with HR and payroll service providers.
• Prepare and/or review R&D and clinical accruals and related accounting, partnering with Clinical Operations and other internal stakeholders to evaluate vendor activity, contracts, purchase orders, milestones and other available information to support complete and accurate expense recognition in the appropriate period.
• Support the development and ongoing enhancement of R&D accrual methodologies, reconciliations and related controls; coordinate with external vendors and internal teams to obtain timely information, investigate variances and improve the accuracy and efficiency of the accrual process.
• Support the preparation, review and tie-out of quarterly and annual SEC filings, including footnotes and supporting disclosure schedules
• Support the design, implementation and ongoing enhancement of internal controls over financial reporting, including SOX readiness and compliance initiatives, process documentation, control execution, testing support and remediation activities.
• Lead and support internal and external audit activities, including preparation and review of audit support, coordination of requests and timely resolution of questions and recommendations.
• Mentor, coach and develop accounting team members; establish clear ownership and expectations, provide regular feedback, and promote cross-training to strengthen team capabilities, coverage and succession readiness.
• Identify and lead opportunities to automate accounting activities, streamline close and reporting procedures, improve system utilization and eliminate manual or duplicative processes while maintaining appropriate controls.
• Develop and maintain scalable accounting procedures, reconciliations, checklists and reporting schedules appropriate for a growing public company.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
• 8+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, with commensurate experience with the Associate Director or Director level.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and experience with relevant accounting and financial reporting matters.
• Experience supporting a public-company close and external reporting environment, including quarterly and annual reporting processes.
• Demonstrated experience leading workstreams, reviewing the work of others and developing accounting team members.
• Strong analytical, organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional stakeholders and external service providers.
• Must be eligible to work in the United States without the need for work visa or residency sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

• CPA desired.
• Public accounting experience.
• Experience in a publicly traded biotechnology, pharmaceutical or life sciences company, or another high-growth public-company environment.
• Experience preparing or reviewing R&D and clinical accruals and partnering with Clinical Operations, CROs or other external research and development vendors.
• Hands-on experience with SEC reporting, including preparation or detailed tie-out of Forms 10-Q and 10-K and related financial statement disclosures.
• Experience with equity administration platforms and accounting for stock-based compensation.
• Experience with SOX 404 readiness or ongoing compliance.
• Experience overseeing payroll accounting and partnering with HR on payroll and equity-related matters.
• Experience with ERP and financial reporting systems process improvement, automation and systems optimization.
• Proven ability to build collaborative relationships, mentor and develop team members, and create effective cross-training.
