Heavy Equipment Mechanic

The purpose of the Heavy Equipment Mechanic classification within the Shop department is to inspect, diagnose and repair all vehicles, trucks, and equipment.

Examples Of Duties

The functions listed below are those that represent most of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

• Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs equipment including heavy duty trucks, mulching and refuse equipment, spreaders, excavators, dozers, loaders, dump bodies/trailers, tractors, backhoes, sweepers, and all fire and rescue apparatus.
• Diagnoses, disassembles, and insects and repairs or replaces systems including air and hydraulic brakes, cooling systems, drive lines, gas and diesel engines, HVAC, advanced hydraulics, electrical, steering and suspension, and transmission.
• Inspects, services, and adjusts fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches; changes filters; oils and lubricate vehicles and motor driven equipment.
• Pick up specialized parts from vendors; operates service trucks and on-board equipment.
• Enters data and parts to repair orders.
• Fabricates, installs, and modifies special equipment or replacement parts using welders, torches, plasma cutters, grinders, and metal cutting saws.
• Performs related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Education: Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in automotive technology or closely related field.

Experience: Requires one year of experience in automotive maintenance and repair or closely related experience.

Supplemental Information

Special Certifications and Licenses Required Certifications and Licenses Valid in the State of Georgia.

• Requires a driver's license valid in the State of Georgia.
• Must possess or have the ability to possess a Georgia commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement within six months of hire.

Physical Demand *Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

• Heavy Work – Involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighting up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment (Unavoidable Hazards) *Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

• Involves routine and frequent exposure to chemicals/noxious fumes, moving machinery.
