Behavior SpecialistQualifications:Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Psychology or related field.One to two years experience in a position which provides behavior interventions and support in an educational setting.Experience in providing staff development, presentations or inservices on topics related to behavioral support.Reports To: Principal and/or Assistant Principal Term Of Employment: 9 monthsBasic Functions:The Behavior Specialist shall provide counseling, skill training and support services to students who have, or are at risk for developing significant problem behaviors that impair their ability to effectively participate and benefit from their education. The Behavior Specialist will provide preventive techniques to school faculty and minimize unsafe behaviors in the school setting and provide direct support to instructional staff, while promoting positive behavior intervention strategies.In the event of an emergency, the Behavior Specialist will respond to defuse the situation in a safe and supportive manner. He/she will assist the Assistant Principal/Administrative Assistant in providing staff development in "Best Practices" positive support strategies for improving individual behavior, classroom management and school-wide behavior support strategies. The Behavior Specialist will assist the Family Support Coordinator in establishing, developing and facilitating Family Support Team meetings and implement suggested strategies. To maintain a culture of positive student behavior in a school setting, the Behavior Specialist shall provide behavior interventions that will increase self esteem, raise student's expectations for achievement, impact life/social skill development and encourages student's positive self-awareness.Responsibilities:Develop and implement behavior intervention/modification plans by mentoring, coaching and counseling students that have been referred.Implement and teach affected students appropriate behaviors and alternatives to potentially harmful actions.Provide opportunities for students to practice/demonstrate learned skills including manners, conflict resolution, cooperation and teamwork.Holding students accountable for delivering natural and logical consequences and using corrective teaching.Provide direct support to instructional staff in identifying, planning and implementing positive behavior intervention strategies, effective behavior and classroom management techniques. Provide consultation to school staff in the effective use of a behavior assessment. Provide consultation to school staff in effective planning and implementation of the behavior intervention/modification plans.Work cooperatively and collaboratively with school staff, parents, and other personal to identify and implement positive behavioral supports for students.Assist in establishing, developing and facilitating collaborative teams which provide proactive, problem-solving on-site support for instructional and administrative staff as they develop effective behavior intervention strategies.Provide trainings in use of non-invasive, self defense methods when working with potentially unsafe behaviors and crisis intervention plans adopted by the building.Provide staff development trainings regarding the most progressive and effective methods of behavior modification and classroom management systems.Respond to an emergency crisis situations on a day to day basis to resolve the issues in a professional manner that models best practices strategies.To intervene and diffuse any potentially unsafe behaviors on building grounds.Respond to referrals from school personnel by providing problem-solving consultation and support in a professional manner.Reading and researching information pertinent to student behavior management and intervention issues.Other duties as assigned by the Principal or Assistant Principal.Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board Policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
