RESEARCH ASSISTANT (Prater) Division: CAS Department: Biology Experience: Intermediate‑level Job Code: NA Supervisor of Student Employee(s): Peyton Prater Requested Start Date: 8/24/2026 Responsibilities And Career Competencies Conduct outdoor field surveys to collect biological, ecological, or environmental data – CT, C, P, TW Record, organize, and maintain accurate field notes and data sheets using digital or written formats – CT, T, P Assist with setup, calibration, and use of field research equipment (e.g., GPS units, sampling nets, environmental sensors) – T, P, CSD Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and peers to complete field projects and research goals – TW, L, C Ensure safety protocols are followed in outdoor environments (use of protective gear, awareness of hazards) – P, CT, L Contribute to data entry, preliminary analysis, and preparation of research reports or presentations – T, C, CT Engage respectfully with local communities, landowners, and partners during off‑campus fieldwork – C, CTR, P Demonstrate initiative by learning new field methods, research tools, and environmental monitoring techniques – CSD, T, CT Competencies/Skills: Communication (C), Teamwork (TW), Professionalism (P), Career & Self Development (CSD), Critical Thinking (CT), Community Transformation (CTR), Leadership (L), Technology (T) Computer Skills: GIS Software Other Skills: Attention to detail, , Written & verbal communication, Customer focused, Willingness to learn new things Work Schedule: Hours vary depending on workload Work Conditions: Heat, Cold, Odors/Smoke, Light Intensity, Wetness, Humidity Physical Demands: Reaching/Handling, Crouching/Crawling, Pushing up to 50 lbs., Climbing, Balancing, Number of Positions: 2 Hours needed per week: 15 per student Pay Rate: $10.50/hour Location: Off campus – The Breaks Interstate Park (with some on‑campus work possible) The University of Pikeville is an equal opportunity employer committed to assembling a diverse, broadly trained faculty and staff.
