Description MaineHealth Institute for Research Professional - Nonclinical Req #: 71872 Position Summary The Jin Laboratory at the MaineHealth Institute for Research, Scarborough, ME is seeking a Research Data Analyst to develop and apply cutting‑edge machine learning models to multi‑omics biology. The research focuses on understanding complex biological processes including obesity, evolutionary dynamics, and longitudinal growth trajectories. The Jin lab focuses on building robust, interpretable and uncertainty‑aware AI systems that can improve clinical decision‑making and uncover biological mechanisms of disease development. Our work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, clinical research and biology, with the goal of making real impact to improve patient care. Jin Lab has developed a wide collaboration across multiple institutions including Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Roux Institute at Northeastern University, Jackson Laboratory, Van Andel Institute and A*STAR Institute. The Research Data Analyst will conduct research under the guidance of Principal Investigator, Dr. Qingchu Jin, and will be co‑mentored by collaborators across multiple disciplines. The successful candidate will contribute to projects addressing a wide range of clinically and biologically motivated research questions, with a strong emphasis on translational impact and biological discovery. Current research in the lab involves the analysis of large‑scale biomedical datasets, including longitudinal electronic health record (EHR) data, unstructured clinical notes, and multi‑omics datasets such as DNA methylation, RNA sequencing, genomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, and microbiome data. These projects aim to develop and apply advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning methods to better understand complex biological systems and improve clinical decision‑making. The position provides access to substantial computational resources, including local GPU clusters, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and the Explorer high‑performance computing cluster at Northeastern University. The Research Data Analyst will work closely with clinicians, clinical scientists, biologists, and computational scientists across MaineHealth and partner institutions. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to collaborative grants and publish in high‑impact journals and leading computer science and biomedical informatics conferences. Organize and maintain data storage systems, ensuring proper documentation, data integrity, and reproducible data workflows. Develop novel AI and computational methods to address biological and clinical research problems. Contribute to writing scientific publications in peer‑reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Collaborate closely with clinical and biological partners to understand research needs and develop innovative computational tools. Work with the Principal Investigator to support the preparation of research grant proposals and related funding applications. Special Consideration Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Biostatistics, Medical Informatics, or a related quantitative field, with 5 or more years of relevant experience. Candidates with less experience can be considered at the Research Data Analyst I or II level. Strong programming skills in Python (experience with R is a plus) and experience working in Linux‑based environments. Experience with machine learning and deep learning, including frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow. Experience with HPC environments, including GPU computing and large‑scale data processing. Strong expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning methods. Experience with multi‑omics data analysis (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, microbiome) is preferred. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams including clinicians, experimental scientists, and computational researchers. Demonstrated creativity, initiative, and a collaborative mindset are highly valued. Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Education: Master’s degree required. License/Certifications: N/A Experience: Five years of experience analyzing data required. Three years of experience in healthcare preferred. Experience working with large clinical and/or administrative claims databases, including management and analysis preferred. Demonstrates competency in all essential functions of a Research Data Analyst II role. Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Advanced skills with at least one statistical software package e.g., SAS, R, STATA, SPSS. Advanced knowledge of and experience with spreadsheet, relational database, graphics and word processing software. Additional Skills/Requirements Preferred: Proficiency with multiple statistical software packages.
