As a Government Information Specialist, you will research, interpret, and apply FOIA/PA statutes and regulations while processing complex FOIA/PA cases. Exercises judgment in determining appropriate handling of legal, administrative, regulatory, or sensitive information and applies multiple sources of guidance to complete case processing and document review assignments. Residency Requirement: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Probationary Period: You may be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year. Qualifications The qualifications for this position must be met by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on 09/28/2026. Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the lower grade or equivalent grade band in the Federal service. GS-09: You qualify at the GS-09 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the majority of the following duties: Reviewing legal, administrative, or sensitive documents and case materials for completeness, accuracy, consistency, and compliance with applicable requirements Applying principles, concepts, and methods of legal research and analysis to gather, evaluate, and summarize information from electronic and documentary sources Using automated systems, databases, or case management software to create, track, process, or manage legal, administrative, or case-related matters Inputting, organizing, validating, and analyzing information within databases or case management systems Identifying issues, discrepancies, or missing information in case files or document submissions and recommending appropriate corrective action OR You may substitute a Master's degree or two (2) full years of graduate education leading to such a degree in any field, or a J.D. or L.L.B. degree for experience required at the GS-09 grade level. Such education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise two years of graduate education. If that information is not available, use 36 semester or 54 quarter hours. GS-11: You qualify at the GS-11 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the majority of the following duties: Receiving, reviewing, processing, researching, and verifying legal, administrative, regulatory, or sensitive document requests, case files, or related matters Conducting detailed analysis of case materials, records, or legal documents to determine completeness, relevance, responsiveness, or compliance with applicable rules, regulations, statutes, policies, or procedures Providing technical assistance or guidance to management, staff, stakeholders, or the public on case processing procedures, document requirements, automated systems, or applicable administrative processes Applying knowledge of records systems, document management practices, records policies, and procedures to determine whether records, case files, or document productions are complete and properly maintained Ensuring appropriate documentation, rules, regulations, statutes, policies, and procedures are applied to case processing, document review, administrative actions, appeals, litigation support, or related legal support activities OR You may substitute a doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent degree) or three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in any field, or L.L.M. if related for experience at the GS-11 grade level or such education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
