POSITION SUMMARY

This position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). It may provide coverage at multiple locations. Responsibilities include the collection and receipt of biological specimens, proper entry into the computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and distribution to the proper area. Includes responsibility for pre and post aspects of analytical testing. May also perform specified analytical testing as assigned. Follows guidelines of the Code of Conduct and performs all functions per established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and professional standards.

CORE FUNCTIONS

Specimen collection, general laboratory specimen processing, and/or referral laboratory processing; ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity using appropriate techniques for all age criteria. In IOP locations, manage client relationships within compliance regulations. Enter and verify patient demographics, location, physician data, tests requested, time and date of collection, clinical information, and other pertinent data from requisitions and orders; verify accuracy and appropriateness of specimens; aliquot, label, and deliver specimens to the technical area, or perform initial processing and preparation for transport; assist in workflow monitoring and training new employees. Focus on quality; ensure accurate and complete work; complete documents legibly; maintain familiarity with procedures; record communications; initiate reports for patient reporting and quality assurance; meet departmental standards for productivity and quality; participate in committees or Six Sigma teams; maintain acceptable specimen rejection rates. Participate in financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies and materials; avoid excessive waste; support cost-reduction initiatives. Communicate courteously and professionally with internal and external customers; work across all areas and shifts; resolve basic service issues; attend meetings and stay current with communications. Acknowledge and understand the importance of patient rights and privacy (HIPAA).

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY

Primarily departmental responsibility; involved in interdepartmental communication and activities. Internal Customer: Employees of the system. External Customer: Nurses, physicians, office personnel, and vendors.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT FACTORS

Must stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently. Must lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds. Requires manual dexterity and use of standard precautions due to exposure to blood, body fluids, chemical, electrical, and biological hazards. Ability to distinguish colors and assimilate instructions quickly. Requires use of computer, printers, copiers, telephone, fax, and department-specific equipment.

Personal maturity and responsibility. Excellent reading, writing, and math abilities. Effective oral and written communication. Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills. Basic computer skills. Customer service skills; good performance reviews; pass on-site competency evaluation/assessment as defined by the department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum age 18. High School diploma or equivalent (state regulatory requirements). Basic knowledge of departmental resources. Completion of a phlebotomy program or experience. Phlebotomy certification as defined by state regulations. May require DHS Fingerprinting Certification or ability to obtain fingerprint certification. Valid state driver's license (in state of employment) and eligibility for coverage under company auto insurance. Float positions require travel and flexible hours with coverage at multiple locations, mobile or in-office phlebotomy facilities; flexibility for weekends, holidays, overtime, on-call duties. Progression through career ladder II-IV subject to completion of required ladder requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
