Job Title: Environmental Engineer
Job Description
The Environmental Engineer will lead regulatory compliance, sustainability initiatives, and environmental management systems within a dynamic manufacturing environment. This role serves as the subject matter expert for environmental compliance, ensuring adherence to federal, state, and internal standards while driving continuous improvement in sustainability and environmental performance. The position requires strong project ownership, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to interpret and act on complex environmental regulations, while effectively managing data, reporting, and environmental programs.
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations, including air permitting (Title V), hazardous waste management under RCRA, emergency planning and community right-to-know requirements (EPCRA/SARA), and stormwater permitting (KPDES), while maintaining strong working relationships with regulatory agencies.
- Lead and maintain the Environmental Management System, serving as the primary point of contact for audits and external registrars, and ensuring ongoing certification and conformance to relevant standards.
- Drive sustainability initiatives such as waste reduction and recycling programs, with a strong focus on achieving “Zero to Landfill” objectives and advancing long-term environmental and sustainability goals.
- Manage environmental reporting and data analysis, including preparation, review, and submission of required federal, state, and customer environmental compliance reports and documentation.
- Develop, deliver, and maintain environmental training programs to ensure employees understand and follow environmental procedures, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
- Maintain and oversee safety data systems (MSDS/SDS), ensuring accurate documentation, accessibility, and compliance with applicable regulations and internal standards.
- Support and lead continuous improvement efforts related to emissions reduction, waste minimization, and resource conservation, using data and environmental management software to identify trends and opportunities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, operations, and maintenance, to integrate environmental requirements into processes, projects, and daily activities.
- Act as a subject matter expert on environmental programs and permits, providing guidance on air permits, wastewater, hazardous waste, and other environmental compliance obligations.
- Use environmental management software and data analysis tools to monitor performance, track key metrics, and support decision-making and strategic planning.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or a related field, or a minimum of 2+ years of relevant environmental experience in lieu of a degree.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of environmental programs, including air permits, wastewater, hazardous waste, and related environmental compliance requirements.
- Strong data analysis capability, including the ability to interpret environmental data, identify trends, and translate findings into actionable improvements.
- Experience with Environmental Management Systems and program ownership, including maintaining systems and supporting audits.
- Proficiency with environmental management software such as EHS Insight, Intelex, Enablon, Quentic, or similar platforms.
- Expertise in environmental regulatory compliance, including federal and state environmental regulations and reporting requirements.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and work with minimal supervision after orientation and training.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in a manufacturing environment is preferred. Background in environmental engineering, environmental health and safety, or environmental management programs.
- Familiarity with sustainability initiatives such as waste reduction, recycling programs, and “Zero to Landfill” strategies.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to develop and deliver environmental training to diverse audiences.
- Experience using data analysis tools in combination with environmental management software to support compliance and continuous improvement.
Work Environment
This role operates in both office and production floor environments within a manufacturing facility. The production floor may involve exposure to temperatures ranging from cold to very hot, varying noise levels, and occasional fumes. Ear protection is required at all times on the production floor, and uniforms are provided as part of the standard attire. The position requires the ability to work efficiently under multiple deadlines and changing priorities, with minimal supervision after initial orientation and training. There may be occasional international travel, including trips to Japan for global conferences, estimated at less than 5% of the time. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $31.25 - $40.86/hr.
