Position Overview

This role is for an experienced Operating Room Registered Nurse at the Clinical Nurse II level, essential to the surgical team. The nurse provides expert, patient-focused care throughout the perioperative period, demonstrating advanced skills and certifications. Independence and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams are key to ensuring patient safety and excellent surgical outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Patient Care: Coordinate with healthcare professionals to deliver safe, timely, and equitable surgical care. Perform thorough preoperative assessments and develop personalized perioperative care plans. Monitor patients during surgery and intervene promptly when necessary. Advocate for patient dignity and confidentiality. Administer moderate sedation during Endoscopy procedures.
• Surgical Support: Manage surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies properly. Handle and document surgical specimens according to protocols. Anticipate surgical team needs to maintain smooth workflow.
• Safety and Compliance: Follow strict aseptic and infection control procedures. Adhere to regulatory standards including The Joint Commission, OSHA, and AORN guidelines. Ensure compliance with patient identification, pre-procedure verification, Universal Protocol, and prevention of retained surgical items. Report safety concerns and contribute to systemic improvements.
• Documentation: Accurately record perioperative care, patient progress, and intraoperative events in electronic medical records.
• Professional Development and Leadership: Mentor and precept junior nursing staff and students. Engage in continuing education, certifications, workshops, and quality improvement projects. Advocate for best practices within surgical services.
• Emergency Preparedness: Respond decisively and skillfully in critical situations such as cardiac arrest or massive hemorrhage.

Qualifications

Experience

• Minimum two years as a Registered Nurse in a high-acuity operating room.
• At least two years as a CVOR Registered Nurse.
• Proven ability to manage complex cases across multiple surgical specialties including Neuro, Spine, HEENT, General, GYN, Vascular, Thoracic, Minimally Invasive, Robotic, and Orthopedics.
• Scrub experience is highly preferred.

• Technical Skills: Proficient with advanced surgical equipment and technology. Strong knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. Expertise in sterile field management and surgical protocols.
• Critical Thinking: Quick decision-making in high-pressure environments. Ability to prioritize and adapt to dynamic surgical cases.
• Communication: Effective verbal and written communication with surgical teams, patients, and families. Strong interpersonal skills to foster teamwork.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with five years of high-acuity OR experience may be considered in lieu of BSN.

Licenses

Current Registered Nurse license valid in the state of California is required.

Certifications

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and American Heart Association Healthcare Provider certification required.
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required; must be obtained within 90 days of hire if not already held.
• Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) certification is preferred.
