About The Position The Police Officer position with the Town of Truckee offers an opportunity to serve and protect one of California’s most vibrant mountain communities. Job Description Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of patrol and community‑based policing duties involving crime prevention and investigation, protection of life and property, and enforcement of laws, codes, and ordinances; responds to emergencies and calls for service; performs investigations and assists in preparation of cases; provides information and assistance to the public; participates in community relations activities; and performs related duties as assigned. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory and/or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is the journey‑level classification in the sworn Police Officer series. The position requires initiative and judgment, with occasional instruction as new or unusual situations arise. The class is distinguished from Police Sergeant, who is the first supervisory level responsible for organizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing staff in an assigned unit. EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS Patrol and maintain a highly visible presence within the community to deter crime and resolve community issues. Respond to emergency calls for service, manage situations, and enforce state and local laws, ordinances, and codes. Provide information, directions, and assistance to the public, take reports, and assist with complaints or unusual situations. Control and monitor traffic, issue citations, assist motorists, and provide traffic control during accidents or special events. Make arrests, serve warrants and subpoenas, and transport individuals for medical clearance or booking. Secure crime scenes, conduct investigations, interview suspects, victims, and witnesses, and preserve evidence. Prepare reports, logs, and records related to arrests, activities, and incidents. Represent the Town and Police Department in public presentations and community activities. Analyze crime trends, communicate with outside agencies, and collaborate with school administrators to keep students safe. Provide initial medical assistance and first aid to injured persons when necessary. Attend meetings, training, and other professional development activities. Provide mutual aid to other law enforcement agencies as dispatched. Prepare cases for trial, testify in court, and coordinate pre‑trial activities with the District Attorney’s Office. Research, develop, and implement special programs, and provide training to less experienced Officers. Typical Qualifications Knowledge of: Functions and services of a contemporary community‑based full‑service municipal police department. Law enforcement principles, practices, and techniques related to patrol, traffic enforcement, crime scene control, and investigation. Rules of evidence, modern investigative methods, and safety practices for vehicles and equipment. Preparation of police reports, record‑keeping principles, and procedural guidelines. Applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Customer service techniques for interacting with the public and other stakeholders. Ability To Demonstrate integrity and fairness to build public trust. Perform law enforcement duties safely and effectively. Engage with a diverse community and implement community‑based policing. Make sound decisions in non‑emergency and emergency situations. Maintain accuracy in reports, records, and evidence handling. Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Education And Experience Equivalents: Twelth‑grade diploma or equivalent. Graduation from a California POST‑certified basic law enforcement academy. Licenses And Certifications Valid driver’s license maintained throughout employment. Ability to obtain a valid POST Basic Certificate upon completion of the probationary period. PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS Mobility in patrol and field environments; frequent walking, running, standing on uneven terrain, and climbing. Strength and stamina to apprehend, lift, carry, and transport victims and suspects. Vision and manual dexterity to operate vehicles and firearms at high speeds. Hearing and speech to communicate effectively. WORKING CONDITIONS Field duties exposed to criminal offenders, mentally ill individuals, and the potential for communicable diseases. Outdoor conditions with extreme temperatures, inclement weather, loud noise, and hazardous substances. Office duties with moderate noise and controlled temperatures. Potential for overtime, weekend work, stand‑by, and shift work.
