Job Summary Perform all types of work involved with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities. All items apply to overhead and underground, as applicable. Employee may perform miscellaneous, related, and incidental work in addition to that specifically outlined below. Candidate must reside within 45 minutes of the designated service center (Pineville, WV or Wytheville, VA). The role is posted in the Line Mechanic D-A range and requires completion of the HireVue Line Worker Virtual Job Tryout unless exempt. Essential Job Functions Line Mechanic D (Entry Level) Assist with assembly, installation, maintenance, removal, and inspection of underground and overhead facilities under direct or immediate supervision. Perform ground person duties as needed. Load, unload, handle, and maintain poles, towers, and structures. After D-100 (or equivalent experience), operate company equipment (except diggers/derricks and aerial lifts), climb poles, ladders, and work on de-energized conductors. May work on conductors energized up to 260 V under direct supervision. Operate digger/derrick and aerial devices under immediate supervision after D-200 (or equivalent experience). May work on conductors energized up to 260 V under supervision of a higher classification. Install line material and hardware, use hand lines, tie knots, and demonstrate basic rope and rigging skills. Splice primary and secondary overhead wires using proper tools, hardware, and equipment. Operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers, and other sectionalizing devices after D-200. May transition from direct to immediate to general supervision as skills develop. Inspect, maintain, and organize tools, equipment, and work area. Manage rubber gloves, insulating blankets, hoses, and covers. Maintain company vehicles and equipment. Execute pole-top and bucket truck rescue processes upon training completion. Protect and control work area with barricades, flags, signs, and cones. Set and remove as required. Maintain accurate records, read and record meter information, and submit monthly apprentice cards for review. Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned. Line Mechanic C (Intermediate Level) Assemble, install, maintain, remove, and inspect overhead and underground facilities under immediate or general supervision. After C-100, competent to work on conductors energized up to 260 V under general supervision and on conductors up to 600 V under immediate supervision. Test, de-energize, and ground URD cable; splice and terminate URD cable; troubleshoot, repair, and energize URD cable under immediate or general supervision. Use voltage and continuity testers, meggers, and other electrical test equipment for voltages up to 600 V. Pass and transfer primary conductors under direct supervision as skills advance. Perform tasks in the B classification during the first twelve months of the C classification. Build and erect equipment mountings, such as regulator and transformer platforms, and oversee overhead transformer installations. Conduct proper tagging procedures while performing switching of energized circuits. Inspect and troubleshoot lines. Direct the work of employees assigned to assist and complete monthly apprentice cards. Line Mechanic B (Advanced Level) Assemble, install, maintain, remove, and inspect conductors, fixtures, and associated equipment on overhead and underground facilities. During the first twelve months, assist with work on energized lines and equipment, progressing from direct to immediate to general supervision. Operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers, and other sectionalizing devices; re-fuse line and transformer devices; test de-energized lines; place or remove grounds. Install, maintain, and switch residential and commercial underground distribution facilities. Locate and correct faults using cable-locating and fault-finding tools. Install and maintain street light circuits; install three-phase transformer banks on poles and platforms; install regulator banks; energize or remove transformer's and capacitor banks. Check phase rotation, parallel, and voltage on transformer installations. Locate and correct faults and hazardous conditions on lines. Conduct safety meetings. Direct the work of employees assigned to assist and submit monthly apprentice cards. Line Mechanic A (Senior Level) Install and maintain transmission and distribution facilities, including line equipment, on congested construction, whether energized or de-energized. Assemble, install, maintain, remove, and inspect conductors, fixtures, and equipment on overhead and underground facilities. Operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers, and sectionalizing devices without supervision. Perform line and transformer taps, phase-outs, and parallel circuits. Interpret standard drawings, specifications, and conduct new construction and live line work. Execute live line cut-overs, emergency repairs, and routine modifications of facilities. Establish and release transmission and distribution clearances or permits following switching and tagging procedures. Instruct customers on meter or service locations and advise on service interruptions. Direct crew assignments and assist higher classification employees. Perform any required related work. Minimum Requirements High school diploma or GED. For Line Mechanic D: No experience required; line work experience or line school education preferred. For Line Mechanic C: Minimum of one year of distribution line work experience or equivalent internship. Valid Class A CDL required. For Line Mechanic B: Minimum of two years of Line Mechanic C experience or equivalent. Valid Class A CDL required. For Line Mechanic A: Successful completion of apprentice lineman training with B-200 certification test score of 80% or higher; successful completion of hands‑on demonstrations. External candidates require at least four years of line work experience and journeyman pre‑assessment. Valid Class A CDL required. Other Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license and acquire a CDL beginner's permit within 60 days of the probationary period. Must demonstrate ability and desire to acquire necessary knowledge and skills to advance to higher classifications, with performance appraisals and examinations as required. Must complete a physical abilities assessment. May be required to work additional duties as assigned to meet line workforce needs.
