Public Safety Coordinator
Coordinate both emergency and non-emergency public safety response in order to protect life and property.
Essential Duties
Effectively communicate with people by giving information, directions and instructions via telephone and radio.
Gather information; receive complaints and/or requests for service (both routine and emergency), via a multi-line telephone system and/or through multi-channel radio equipment as prescribed by policy and procedure.
Using highly technical equipment, develop the ability to dispatch resources in accordance with the Department's Standard Operating Procedures.
Monitor mutual aid data and radio channels.
Correctly determine department responses for varying Police/Fire/EMS emergency situations
Provide accurate contact with and deployment of department personnel and equipment to maintain continuous situational awareness
Prioritize actions during multiple response scenarios requiring division of attention.
Undergo a periodic audit/review of information queries
Document each action and response from both emergency and non-emergency request for service utilizing the computer aided dispatch system as well as required logs and forms.
Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
May require unrestricted mandatory overtime. 24 hour operations requiring shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime coverage.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
This position requires the application of communication skills in a calm demeanor with a professional attitude, and a mature disposition all being necessities of the job.
Ability to type at a net speed of 50 words per minute.
Ability to operate a computer terminal.
Ability to understand and operate a basic computer program functions such as file, save, recovery and search.
Know how to route printing jobs to different printers.
Understand and use capabilities of e-mail.
Be able to memorize hot key functions.
Maintain a high level of competency in case file management.
Accurately track and submit documents to/from agencies and personnel.
Correct recording of information to/from case files to database.
Be able to read, comprehend and communicate legal and non-legal documents such as driving records, criminal histories, citations, domestic violence paperwork, no-code death advisements, and warrants.
Maintain strict confidentiality of all calls, conversations, and written materials.
Ability to provide geographical detail within service areas.
Prepare and maintain numerous logs, files, report forms, statistical data and correspondence using correct English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Ability to learn, within a reasonable period of training, the operation of dispatch communication equipment.
Experience, Education Certificates, and Licenses
High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
Two years of work experience involving a substantial amount of public contact and office clerical duties.
Must pass an extensive background investigation, audiological examination, and pre-employment drug testing.
Emergency Services, Computer, Public Safety Communications, or Military related experience is desired.
Applicants will be tested to determine experience, skill level, and abilities.
Telecommunications experience is desired.
Within one (1) year of appointment, attend and satisfactorily complete an approved supervised training course.
Be able to obtain and hold a security clearance meeting the requirements of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN).
Qualify and pass all initial and yearly APSIN Exams. Protection of APSIN information required by State law.
Obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Dispatch and CPR certifications.
Must possess a valid driver's license at time of application and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
Must provide a current (within 30 days of request) driving record from the state in which driver's license is held.
Must obtain a valid State of Alaska Driver's License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
