Juvenile Services Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Juvenile Department

Marion County is seeking a skilled and professional Licensed Practical Nurse to work in a team environment at the Juvenile Department. Working alongside other nurses, you will be providing direct care to youth currently under the department’s care. The ideal candidate will have experience with health assessments, distributing medications and updating MARS, and triaging medical situations that may arise. Youth under our care may be residing in Juvenile Detention Facility or the Guaranteed Attendance Program, or they may be active in our work program, Alternative Programs, which includes the Fresh Start Market. Standard shifts are 10 hours, with a 30-minute lunch. The current shift available is: Sunday 0700-1730 Monday 0600-1630 Tuesday 1030-2100 Wednesday 1030-2100 Days off: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. There are opportunities for overtime. The department does not have overnight shifts. The Juvenile Department strives to create a safe, welcoming, and fun work environment. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) operates according to the Oregon State Board of Nursing Nurse Practice Act. The LPN acts as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, provides direct care services to patients in treatment facilities such as hospitals, institutions, or clinics and in the community to ensure patients’ physical, emotional, and mental well-being; and also provides direct services to prevent disease. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Employees in this class receive general supervision from the Juvenile Detention Manager who evaluates work through direct observation, and feedback from patients' families, and physicians. Medical charting and documentation of patient medical sheets is overseen and reviewed by the contracted physician. Work performed by employees in this class is governed by federal and state laws pertaining to illness, communicable diseases, handling of medication, and reporting of child abuse; Oregon Board of Nursing policies and procedures; patient care plans and physicians' orders; policies and procedures of the agency; and practices of the nursing profession. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this class. RESPONSIBILITIES Provide direct nursing case management service for juveniles in detention, GAP (Guaranteed Attendance Program), and AP (Alternative Program) including pharmacy upkeep, medication dispensing, and responding to Intake for assessment of juveniles new to the facility. Respects and adheres to the authority of the RN and MD regarding all aspects of juvenile care. Provide accurate and thorough nursing assessments for juveniles including but not limited to neurological examination, ears, nose, and throat assessment, respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, genitourinary including sexually transmitted disease, skin and dental assessment, mental and emotional status, and counseling. Document all encounter information accurately, completely, and in a timely manner documenting signs and symptoms observed, plan of actions, education of juvenile, expected or observed outcome, unusual circumstances, outside communications, explanation of refusal for treatment, discharge summary if juvenile is transferred to other facilities. Maintain narcotic records and accurate account including ordering appropriate medication through approved vendor or local pharmacy. Work with appropriate probation officers to coordinate refills with guardians. Develop individualized patient care plans consistent with standing orders or medical orders written by the physician. Adhere to the security principles and procedures of the Juvenile department. Collaborate and maintain harmonious working relationships and communication within and outside the facility and interpret nursing services when appropriate. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING Graduation from a state accredited school of nursing Must possess a current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Oregon at the time of appointment One (1) year of Licensed Practical Nursing experience Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS The finalist for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check, including fingerprinting; however, conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this position. Must have a current CPR certificate. This is a Safety Sensitive/Special Needs position. Must pass a post offer drug screen, including testing for marijuana. Ability to complete training on the security and supervision of juveniles in detention facilities and residential programs within six months after initial hire. This is a full-time position that is eligible for overtime. This position is represented by union. Typical work schedule: Works in a 24-hour, 7-day a week operation, with rotating shift schedules and workstations. This includes working day and swing shifts, weekends and holidays. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Comprehensive knowledge of and skill performing, current nursing practice; in basic mathematics. Ability to apply nursing knowledge and principles and policies underlying the administration of a nursing service; recognize the needs and concerns of individuals in the course of medical treatments; maintain confidential records and information; accept and abide by supervision received; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; skilled in English usage; establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the public. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Sees using depth perception; stands; sits; moves about the work area; bends forward; climbs 1 floor of stairs; reaches overhead; lifts, pushes, pulls, carries and moves carts weighing up to 20 lbs.; frequently carries items weighing between 1-2 pounds; operates a keyboard; speaks with a clear and audible voice; reads a 12-pt. font and 6-pt. medication vials; able to take blood pressure; administer PPD's and draw blood; hears normal speech level; and uses a stethoscope.
