Position Highlights
This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, first shirt 7:45 AM to 3:00 PM.
This role is responsible for the maintenance of:
Emergency generators and emergency lighting;
Fence alarm systems;
Perimeter lighting;
Motorized gates;
Fire alarm systems
Emergency power/UPS equipment;
Cell door control systems;
Surveillance cameras and recording system infrastructure;
High/low voltage distribution system;
Equipment in both the kitchen & laundry areas;
Facility and cell infrastructure wiring;
Record of tool inventory/control;
Snow and ice removal; and
Supervising assigned inmates.

The Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) is the agency responsible for corrections in the U.S. State of Connecticut. The agency operates 13 correctional facilities. It has its headquarters in Wethersfield. The DOC protects public safety by ensuring offenders serve their sentences of imprisonments in facilities that are safe, human, and provide re-entry programming. The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction is a unified system; all sentenced and un-sentenced offenders are supervised by the DOC. The Department also provides supervision for offenders on parole, community release, and other discretionary release programs. Engineering/Facilities Management Services This unit is responsible for providing centralized direction and technical assistance throughout the agency, including management of the capital budget and plan; project design, approval and management; facility preventative maintenance; and repair.
Recently completed projects include building an outdoor firearms training range, conversion of a vacant building to a housing unit at the Gates Correctional Institution, roofing to the main building at the Brooklyn Correctional Institution, and installation of improved body alarms at the Hartford Correctional Center. The unit coordinates the recycling program of the Department of Correction, recycling over 1,310 tons of cardboard and similarly large numbers of plastic, glass and cans. The unit also coordinates compliance with OSHA standards and environmental guidelines.
Selection Plan
Selected candidates will be required to attend a 14-week hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development located in Cheshire, CT.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the repair, monitoring and installation of electrical systems and equipment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Repairs, maintains and installs electrical systems and equipment such as motors, transformers, generators, wiring, switches, fixtures, circuit breakers, emergency lighting, fire alarms, etc.;
Determines electrical malfunctions using test instruments such as amp meter, voltmeter and Volt-Ohm-Milliammeter (VOM) tester and repairs defects by replacing burnt-out elements, fuses or wiring and cleaning or re-wiring components;
Provides instruction and training and maintains custody of and disciplines a group of inmates assigned electrical maintenance duties;
Instructs inmates in planning, layout and wiring of new installations and making equipment adjustments using hand tools;
Keeps records and completes necessary reports;
Evaluates performance of each inmate assigned to work area;
Maintains discipline and enforces security measures;
May perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience, knowledge, skills and agency needs;
May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies;
May be required to operate a motor vehicle;
Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment involved in electrical repair and installation work;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years of experience as an electrician.
NOTE: Based on an individual’s technical experience, the length of credited service will be determined at the discretion of facility management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the highly skilled level.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
Graduation from a vocational or technical school in the electrical trade may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year-for-year basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure in commercial buildings;
Experience with the installation and repair of control wiring for motors, automation, fire-alarm, security CCTV and data networks;
Experience with inspection, testing, and repair of electrical appliances including kitchen and laundry equipment;
Experience and knowledge with standby generators, transfer switch, and UPS systems;
Ability to apply the National Electrical Code;
Experience with Building Management Systems and Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Excel; and
Valid E-1 (Unlimited Electrical Contractor) or E-2 (Unlimited Electrical Journeyperson) license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.
Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.
Incumbents in this class may be required to respond to after-hour emergencies as requested by facility supervisors.
Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates and to the hazards and discomfort of working with electrical power systems.
