Welding Foreman

Position Overview The Working Shop Foreman works within the department and alongside team members in assigned production departments—Material Prep, Fitting, Welding, Machining, or Finishing—to ensure maximum operational success. Served as the primary resource for the department, the Foreman is the key communication link to production management and must possess an excellent working knowledge of manufacturing processes, engineering principles, and ASME/AWS welding procedures. Responsibilities and Duties Assist production management by overseeing team members, scheduling and monitoring work assignments, and setting priorities without continuous supervision. Conduct efficient team meetings and work with other departments to facilitate the flow of materials. Perform visual inspection of welds prior to moving to another department. Review and enforce job hand‑off procedures with welders. Perform stress relieving as per procedures. Ensure the team's quality of products and department work, including proper documentation (weld maps, consumable cards). Manage distribution of consumables and inventory of welding gas. Ensure on‑time delivery to meet schedules as needed. Enforce all welding procedures are followed. Oversee training, development, and certification of all welders. Direct effective utilization of staff and equipment to maximize output while maintaining costs, and recommend staffing needs. Verify tolerances and allowances of materials, parts, and products for the department. Support production management with employee activities, including evaluations, discipline, and PTO. Open and close buildings and start/stop equipment daily in accordance with company procedures. Perform equipment and tooling checks and ensure preventative maintenance measures are taken. Assist the Human Resources department in interviewing welders and fitters and conducting pre‑employment testing. Maintain a favorable employee relations climate through positive supervision, regular communication, and proper application of company policies. Demonstrate leadership through effective communication to all levels of management and team members. Operate material handling equipment as required. Promote and adhere to the Core Values and Behavior Code. Perform all duties and responsibilities of team members in assigned production departments as needed. Possess functional knowledge of overall company operations and the assigned department’s role within that operation. Achieve good speed of execution while maintaining quality workmanship across a wide range of production activities. Maintain work area, equipment, and supplies in a neat and orderly condition and conduct regular safety inspections. Wear appropriate PPE as required by job duties. Promote company goals with a focus on Safety, Quality, and Production. Perform other duties as assigned. Position Requirements Education & Experience Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; 5‑10+ years in a manufacturing environment. Demonstrated manufacturing management experience with progressively increasing responsibility. Minimum 5 years related welding experience; must be able to attain AWS certification in all relevant processes. Ability to weld in all positions and experience with layout and fit‑up of complex fabrications. Six Sigma Continuous Improvement experience is a plus. Proven blue‑print reading and comprehension experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills; ability to develop professional working relationships. People‑development skills, including training, coaching, mentoring, and team development. Expert understanding of manufacturing processes. Knowledge of quality systems and lean manufacturing standards and practices. Knowledge of health and safety standards and compliance. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Strong problem‑solving ability and ability to coordinate, organize, and prioritize multiple tasks. Adaptability and flexibility to shift priorities based on the organization’s needs. Ability to exercise independent judgment, make sound decisions, take ownership, and operate with minimal supervision.
