Job Description: Maintenance Worker (Full-Time)
FLSA Status: Nonexempt
Reports To: Building Administration / Director of Operations
Position Summary

The Maintenance Worker (Plumbing Specialist) is a skilled position focused on the maintenance, repair, and operation of critical school building systems. While performing general facility upkeep, this role serves as the primary technical expert for the facility's plumbing and water systems. The employee ensures that all physical facilities, particularly water supply and waste systems, remain in peak condition to provide a safe, sanitary, and functional environment for students and staff.
Qualifications & Requirements

• Education: High school diploma or GED.
• Licensing: Valid driver's license (CDL preferred). A Master Plumber or Journeyman Plumber license is highly preferred.
• Experience: Extensive practical experience in maintenance, with a heavy emphasis on commercial plumbing systems , water heaters, and drainage. Familiarity with HVAC and building controls is a plus.
• Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of local plumbing codes, pipe fitting, blueprints, and the operation of specialized diagnostic plumbing equipment.
• Physical Demands: Ability to lift 55 lbs, push/pull 20 lbs frequently, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or various weather conditions.
• Communication: Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with staff, parents, students, and the community.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Plumbing & System Specialization

• System Maintenance: Perform comprehensive preventive maintenance and repairs on plumbing systems, including leaks, clogged drains, and fixture replacements (sinks, toilets, fountains).
• Advanced Repair: Troubleshoot and repair water heaters, boilers, circulation pumps, and backflow prevention devices.
• Code Compliance: Ensure all plumbing work complies with local building codes, school division rules, and State/Federal laws.
• HVAC Support: Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on HVAC systems, including air handlers and AC units, specifically where they intersect with water systems.
• General Repair: Assist with secondary electrical, carpentry, and building control tasks as needed.

Operations & Facilities Upkeep

• Priority Planning: Establish and recommend priorities for plumbing-related repair projects and overall preventative maintenance programs.
• Grounds & Fleet: Maintain, service, and operate school vehicles, mowers, snow blowers, and snow plows. Oversee and assist with seasonal operations such as snow removal.
• Tool Operation: Operate all hand tools, power tools, and specialized diagnostic equipment (such as pipe cameras or line locators) safely and effectively.
• Contractor Liaison: Advise on the hiring of and provide oversight for outside contractors for specialized plumbing, HVAC, or structural repairs.

Administrative & Professional Standards

• Documentation: Maintain accurate digital or manual records of work performed, parts used, and assist in preparing status reports for administration.
• Inventory Management: Make recommendations for the purchase of plumbing supplies, tools, and equipment to ensure the shop is well-stocked for emergencies.
• Emergency Response: Respond to emergency and on-call maintenance requests-particularly water-related emergencies-in a timely and professional manner.
• Professionalism: Present a professional image through appropriate dress, grooming, and courteous interactions with all stakeholders.
• Development: Attend safety meetings and participate in professional staff development as requested.

Safety, Security & Professionalism

• Building Security: Secure the building by checking/locking doors when entering/leaving areas on school campuses. Use standardized lock-out/tag-out procedures
• Safety Compliance: Strictly comply with school division policies and state/federal regulations. Wear required safety equipment (safety glasses, back braces, slip-resistant shoes) for tasks such as mowing and heavy lifting.
• Community Relations: Treat all students in a fair and equitable manner, building positive relationships rooted in trust and respect.
• Ancillary Support: Assist with food distribution as needed and perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
