The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking a Senior Maintenance Worker to be a part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. Under general supervision, performs various semi-skilled maintenance and/or construction tasks and performs related work as required. Participates in the work of an assigned athletic field or park maintenance crew, performing semi-skilled and unskilled tasks relating to grounds maintenance and facility repairs. May lead a crew in the absence of Maintenance Crew Chief, inspects and approves the work of maintenance workers. Performs maintenance on park facilities e.g. athletic fields, sport courts, picnic areas, playgrounds, amphitheaters, trails, restrooms, parking lots, signs, fencing, etc. Duties include mowing, snow removal, and other grounds maintenance tasks. Removes litter and performs rough carpentry, light construction, minor repairs, and painting of facilities as necessary. Operates a tractor/bucket loader with attachments, infield groomers, utility vehicles, mowers, and other equipment. Uses gas powered equipment such as trimmer, blower, and chainsaw. Inspects and drives a truck with and without a trailer combination to haul equipment and materials. Informs supervisor of conditions requiring special attention. Maintains tools and equipment in good working order. Completes daily work reports when supervising a crew. Performs related duties as required.

Illustrative Duties

• Performs various semi-skilled tasks, to include specialized concrete and asphalt work (e.g., setting forms, finishing, etc.);
• General maintenance and repair of machinery;
• Constructs culverts and catch basins;
• Adjusts manholes to proper height;
• Inspects and approves work of Maintenance Workers;
• Provides guidance and training to Maintenance Workers;
• Assists customers using the homeowner's disposal facilities;
• Ensures that all white goods are properly processed prior to recycling;
• Assists with spill cleanup, onsite at the disposal facility as well as throughout the county;
• Coordinates various activities associated with repair and maintenance projects (e.g., paving, repairing sanitary sewer lines, rodding, and pressure cleaning operations);
• Transports crew and equipment to work site;
• May lead a crew in absence of Maintenance Crew Chief;
• Inspects, and reviews work of a crew engaged in a variety of basic maintenance, construction and grounds keeping activities;
• May Lead grass cutting, sodding, seeding, and fertilizing activities;
• Leads playground equipment maintenance;
• Participates in the maintenance of building walks, gutters, catch basins, and retaining walls, as well as concrete and asphalt paving projects;
• Completes daily and preventive maintenance reports;
• Trains staff;
• Implements safety procedures;
• Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
• Reports and monitors unsafe working conditions;
• Complies with safety competencies.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of single axle dump truck, trailer, utility bucket truck, snow plow, spreader, tank truck, water truck and pickup truck;

• Basic knowledge of computers;

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.


CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's license (required)


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Combination of two years of athletic field maintenance or parks ground maintenance experience
• Two years of experience operating various small-engine riding equipment, such as: tractors, mowers, utility vehicles and other park maintenance equipment to include battery-operated and hand-held power equipment.
• Able to perform manual labor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to bend, twist, turn, stand, sit and stoop. Ability to climb on and off equipment. Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to operate grounds equipment. Ability to operate motor vehicle and trailer. Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time. Ability to traverse uneven ground. Ability to work in variable weather conditions while performing physical labor.
