Medical Laboratory Technician

Job Summary The medical laboratory technician performs generalist duties across all laboratory areas, supporting diagnostic testing for patient care. Clinical Responsibilities Conduct diagnostic tests on patient samples to assist physicians in diagnosis and monitoring of disease states. Follow standardized procedures and prepare samples for testing. Analyze test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits. Shift Information Night shift schedule: three night shifts in Orangeburg (two 12‑hour, one 8‑hour) and one 8‑hour night shift in Bamberg, rotating with every other weekend. Education & Certification Medical Technologist : Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or related discipline. No prior experience required. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) or equivalent preferred; if not certified, must obtain certification within the first year of employment. Medical Laboratory Technician : Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. No prior experience required. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the ASCP BOC or equivalent; if not certified, must obtain certification within the first year of employment. Physical Requirements Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, and working from elevated areas. Ability to work indoors, in occasional temperature extremes, in confined/cramped spaces, and from kneeling positions. Ability to bend, twist, squat, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted (frequent); lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from floor or 36 inches; lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs.; exert up to 50 lbs. of force (frequent). Ability to perform gross motor and fine motor activities with fingers and hands, including firm grasping, manipulation, and repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows/shoulders. Ability to reach overhead, in all directions, and use both legs for balance and coordination. Maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or both; see and recognize objects close or distant; discriminate colors; determine distance/relationship between objects; maintain good peripheral vision. Maintain hearing acuity, with correction, and perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. Manage stressful situations, work rotating shifts, overtime, and in a latex‑safe environment; maintain tactile sensory functions. Selected positions: maintain good olfactory sense; qualify physically for respirator use (initially and as required).
