Correctional Sergeant I (S)
Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408 Salary Grade: NC07
This position is assigned to Hyde Correctional Institution. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I's in minimum-custody facilities, increasing the custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may at times be the highest-ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or a Correctional Assistant Warden.
Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
- Knowledge of facility operations
- Knowledge of Prisons' policy and procedures
Necessary Special Qualifications:
MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
To be considered for a Correctional Sergeant I position, ALL applicants must :
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G.0302)
- Pass a criminal background check
- Produce a negative drug screening result
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
- Possess a valid driver's license
Required Adverse Weather Reporting :
This position is designated as "Mandatory" and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.
About the Division of Institutions:
The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Veterans' and National Guard Preference:
- Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Member-4 Form (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to their applications.
- Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application, if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.
- Applicants who are former members of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service, must attach a copy of the DD256 or NGB22, along with the state application.

Minimum Education and Experience:
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
