Position Description:

The Appliance Mechanic installs, services and repairs stoves, refrigerators, dishwashing machines, and other electrical household or commercial appliances, using hand tools, test equipment and following wiring diagrams and manufacturer's specifications. This person connects appliances to power source and test meters, such as wattmeter, ammeter, or voltmeter, observes readings on meters and graphic recorders, examines appliance during operating cycle to detect excess vibration, overheating, fluid leaks and loose parts, and disassembles appliances and examines mechanical and electrical parts. The worker traces electrical circuits, following diagram and locates shorts and grounds, using ohmmeter, calibrates timers, thermostats and adjusts contact points, and cleans and washes parts, using wire brush, buffer, and solvent to remove carbon, grease and dust. This person replaces worn or defective parts, such as switches, pumps, bearings, transmissions, belts, gears, blowers and defective wiring, repairs and adjusts appliance motors, reassembles appliance, adjusts pulleys and lubricates moving parts, using hand tools and lubricating equipment.

• Examining appliances and identifying the cause of appliance breakdowns.


• Performing Maintenance work on appliances.


• Repairing or replacing defective or damaged appliance components.


• Maintaining an accurate record of all items/parts used to repair, replace or maintain appliances.


• Installing various appliances as required.

• Experience in O&M to include management of a work force that is responsible for O&M and repair of all facility systems, subsystems, and selected equipment typically found in a Base Operating Services contract.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

• Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.


• Must be able to pass a company drug screen and background check. Must possess a valid state driver's license and insurable driving record.
