Job Overview

The Pain Medical Affairs Science Senior Director is a critical role in Global Medical Affairs, responsible for global activities in the Pain disease area. Key responsibilities include developing and executing the global medical plan, leading scientific communication, engaging external medical experts, and aligning medical content with commercial and cross‑functional partners. The role reports to the disease area Global Medical Lead and is a core member of the Global Medical team.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute and communicate the Global Medical Plan in collaboration with internal stakeholders across Vertex.
• Serve as a senior product expert for all global compound and disease‑area related issues with the external community and internally at Vertex.
• Follow medical developments and integrate new information into medical plans.
• Lead development of global scientific communications and core global materials (e.g., congress plans).
• Represent Vertex at scientific and medical forums, including education forums, societies, patient advocacy groups, and congresses.
• Engage global key thought leaders to gain advisory board participation, therapeutic area insights, and unmet patient needs.
• Perform and lead medical review of brand‑related content.
• Drive alignment on medical content/messaging to ensure functional and regional input.
• Conduct critical appraisals of scientific knowledge, identify gaps, and develop training and core medical materials with the Medical Affairs Training & Capabilities group.
• Collaborate cross‑functionally to create innovative strategies and deliverables.
• Lead complex projects requiring integration across functions and extensive stakeholder management.
• Interpret business challenges and develop best practices to improve products, processes, or services.
• Mentor and coach team members.
• Represent Medical Affairs on commercial teams and support Access, Patient Advocacy, Policy, and Corporate Communications with medical/scientific expertise and materials review.

Knowledge & Skills

• Advanced leadership and expertise in scientific communication frameworks and impactful material development.
• Expertise in health communication principles and effective material development.
• Strong ability to communicate highly complex ideas to senior leaders and apply advanced negotiation skills.
• Enterprise strategic thinking and problem solving for complex, wide‑reaching organizational impact.
• Deep and broad understanding of drug development lifecycle and cross‑functional interdependencies.
• Proven leadership in matrix environments with and without functional authority.
• Compliance expertise and knowledge of relevant legislation or regulatory guidance governing medical information and data privacy.
• Strong stakeholder relationships inside and outside Vertex.

Education & Experience

• Advanced degree (MD, Masters, PharmD, or Ph.D.) or equivalent highly relevant experience.
• Typically requires 12 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 5 or more years of relevant experience in medical affairs and/or clinical development, including both global and country/region experience.

Compensation

Pay Range: $223,200 - $334,800. Eligible for annual bonus and equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay in accordance with federal and state requirements.
