Position Summary
Plimpton & Hills is seeking a driven and relationship-focused Commercial Outside Sales Representative to grow business across Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. This role is responsible for identifying new business opportunities, developing existing customer relationships, and driving sales growth within the commercial plumbing, HVAC, heating, and industrial markets.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter who enjoys building long-term customer partnerships, uncovering project opportunities, and delivering value-driven solutions to contractors, facility managers, municipalities, and commercial customers. Location This position may be based from any Plimpton & Hills branch location throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, or New York and requires regular travel to customer locations throughout the territory.
Essential Functions
Business Development & Sales Growth

• Develop new commercial business opportunities within an assigned territory
• Prospect, qualify, and secure new contractor, commercial, and industrial accounts
• Build and maintain a strong pipeline of opportunities to support continued territory growth
• Achieve or exceed established sales, revenue, and profitability goals
• Identify project opportunities and position Plimpton & Hills as a preferred supplier
• Promote company initiatives, vendor programs, and strategic product categories

Account Management

• Build and maintain strong relationships with existing customers and key decision-makers
• Increase account penetration and expand share of wallet within existing customer accounts
• Conduct regular customer visits to maintain visibility and strengthen partnerships
• Provide exceptional service and support throughout the sales process
• Follow up on quotes, proposals, and opportunities to maximize conversion and customer retention

Customer Engagement & Territory Management

• Maintain an active field presence through customer visits, jobsite visits, networking, and prospecting activities
• Develop a strong understanding of customer operations, challenges, and business goals
• Recommend products, services, and solutions that align with customer needs
• Monitor market conditions, competitive activity, and industry trends within the territory
• Maintain accurate records of customer activity, opportunities, and sales pipeline within CRM systems

Team Collaboration

• Partner with branch teams, inside sales, purchasing, operations, and vendor representatives to support customer success
• Coordinate resources to ensure timely project execution and customer satisfaction
• Assist in resolving customer concerns and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
• Contribute to a positive team environment and support overall company growth objectives

Requirements

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of outside sales experience in HVAC, plumbing, PVF, industrial distribution, mechanical contracting, or a related industry
• Demonstrated success developing new business and growing existing customer relationships
• Strong prospecting, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
• Ability to identify customer needs and deliver consultative sales solutions
• Experience managing a sales territory and maintaining a structured sales pipeline
• Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with internal teams
• Experience using CRM systems and other sales tools to manage customer activity
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required
• Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent industry experience will be considered in lieu of a degree

Physical Requirements

• Ability to travel regularly throughout the assigned territory
• Ability to sit, stand, walk, drive, and use standard office equipment for extended periods
• Ability to occasionally lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds
• Work is performed in office, branch, warehouse, customer, and jobsite environments
• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
