Estimator - General Contracting

Core Responsibilities Project Analysis: Review architectural plans, blueprints, and technical specifications to understand the full scope of work. Quantity Takeoffs: Perform detailed measurements from drawings to quantify all required materials, such as the exact amount of concrete, steel, or lumber needed. Cost Compilation: Calculate expenses for labor, equipment rentals, and specialized subcontractors. Vendor & Subcontractor Management: Solicit and negotiate quotes from suppliers and trade partners (e.g., electrical or plumbing) to ensure the best possible pricing. Risk & Contingency Planning: Identify potential setbacks like weather delays or material shortages and factor in a "buffer" to protect the company from losses. Bid Submission: Prepare formal, professional proposals and present them to clients or senior management for approval. Technical Proficiency: Mastery of reading complex blueprints and using estimating software like PlanSwift, Bluebeam, or Excel. Numerical Accuracy: Strong mathematical skills in algebra and geometry are required to avoid minor errors that could cost the company thousands. Communication: Ability to explain financial data and project risks clearly to stakeholders, architects, and field teams. Time Management: The role is highly deadline-driven, often requiring the management of multiple bids simultaneously. Primary Setting: Mostly office-based, spending significant time at a computer analyzing data. Site Visits: Occasional travel to construction sites is necessary to verify site conditions, such as soil stability or difficult access, that might impact costs. Schedule: Standard full-time hours (40 per week), though overtime is common when bid deadlines Education Education: Most employers prefer a bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Experience: Many professionals transition into this role after years of hands-on experience in the trades, as a deep understanding of how buildings are physically assembled is critical. Certifications: Industry-recognized credentials, such as the Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or Certified Estimating Professional (CEP), can improve job security and salary potential.
