This role requires an experienced phlebotomist who demonstrates strong proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients of all age groups, including neonates, infants, children, and adults. You will perform pediatric and neonatal blood draws, including difficult collections in high-volume medical office building settings, while maintaining strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The position also involves supporting and orienting patient service technicians, promoting best practices in phlebotomy and safety, and delivering excellent customer service in a patient-centered environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients across all age groups, including neonates, infants, children, and adults.
• Carry out pediatric and neonatal blood draws, including difficult draws, in medical office building and clinic environments.
• Maintain a comprehensive understanding of compliance, safety, and infection control standards, and consistently apply these standards in daily practice.
• Effectively communicate the importance of compliance and safety to coworkers and contribute to a culture of safety and quality.
• Provide orientation and on-the-job training to patient service technicians, sharing best practices and ensuring adherence to established procedures.
• Handle high patient volumes in outpatient settings, drawing approximately 4555 patients within an 8-hour shift when working in clinics or draw stations.
• Manage inpatient workloads in hospital settings, drawing approximately 2030 patients within an 8-hour shift as needed.
• Work under the supervision of the lab supervisor and team lead while collaborating closely with the broader laboratory and clinical team.
• Utilize laboratory information systems (such as Cerner or similar) to accurately document, label, and track specimens.
• Deliver professional, courteous, and empathetic customer service to patients, families, and clinical staff.
• Maintain excellent attendance, punctuality, and professional behavior to support reliable and consistent patient care.
• Travel to multiple medical office building labs within South Orange County as needed to support coverage and patient volume demands.
• Demonstrate strong, independent venipuncture skills and knowledge without requiring basic phlebotomy training on the job.
• Perform heel sticks and other specialized neonatal and pediatric draws based on prior hands-on experience with actual patients.
• Adapt to varying shift schedules between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., including weekdays and weekends, as operational needs require.
• Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures, including performance and conduct expectations, while contributing positively to the team environment.

Essential Skills

• Demonstrated proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups, including pediatric and neonatal patients.
• At least six months of experience in an acute or sub-acute setting, with a preference for one year of experience.
• Hands-on infant draw and neonatal experience beyond classroom-only training.
• Experience working with pediatric patients in clinical or hospital environments.
• Outpatient laboratory experience with the ability to draw approximately 4555 patients in an 8-hour shift.
• Inpatient hospital experience with the ability to draw approximately 2030 patients in an 8-hour shift.
• Current CPT I license.
• High school diploma.
• Proficiency with laboratory information systems, such as Cerner or similar platforms.
• Strong computer literacy and ability to navigate electronic systems efficiently.
• Proven customer service skills and a patient-centered approach.
• Excellent attendance record and consistent professional behavior.
• Ability and willingness to work flexible shifts and hours between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
• Ability to travel to multiple medical office building labs throughout South Orange County.
• Strong independent venipuncture skills, with no need for basic phlebotomy training on the job.
• Practical experience performing neonate and pediatric draws on actual patients.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Hospital experience in an acute or sub-acute setting is a strong plus.
• Experience in high-volume outpatient laboratory settings such as independent draw stations or large diagnostic labs.
• Experience working in both medical office buildings and hospital-based main laboratories.
• Ability to manage high draw volumes while maintaining accuracy, safety, and patient comfort.
• Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with lab supervisors, team leads, and clinical staff.
• Demonstrated reliability, adaptability, and a strong work ethic in fast-paced clinical environments.
• Commitment to patient care and alignment with a culture that prioritizes safety, quality, and service.

Work Environment

The role is based primarily in high-volume medical office building laboratories and clinic draw stations throughout South Orange County, with the potential to transition to the main hospital laboratory upon permanent placement. You will work in multiple draw station locations, supporting a steady flow of patients in outpatient settings and, as needed, in inpatient hospital environments. The workday can fall anywhere between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., and schedules may include weekdays and weekends, requiring flexibility. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with a strong emphasis on safety, compliance, and teamwork. You will use modern laboratory information systems, such as Cerner or comparable platforms, along with standard phlebotomy and specimen collection equipment. Travel between various medical office building labs is a regular part of the role, and you will collaborate closely with lab supervisors, team leads, and other clinical staff in both clinic and hospital settings.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Irvine, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00/hr.
