SUMMARY

To support the mission and philosophy of the MWPCCC, the Mentor Teacher is a member of the leadership team working under the direction of the Executive Director and the supervision of the Site Supervisor. The primary focus of the Mentor Teacher is to lead the classroom teaching staff in providing a healthy, safe, age-appropriate and engaging learning environment where young children (0 to 5 years of age) can develop to their full potential in all areas of development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Consistently oversee children and adults in the physical environment by sight and sound. Enforce all safety rules of the program according to Title 22 regulations, NAEYC ELP Standards, and MWPCCC Policies and Procedures. Provide a flow of the day that is nurturing and responsive by adapting daily care routines and transitions to the interests and needs of the children. Collaborate with co-teachers in planning, preparing and supervise the classroom to provide a supportive environment in which children can learn and practice appropriate and acceptable individual and group social behaviors. Complete daily observations of children to plan, document, assess, and develop emergent curriculum for individual children as well as the entire group. Maintain portfolio for each child in their small group. Plan and provide intentional activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, critical thinking, and problem solving appropriate to the developmental levels and learning styles of the children. Maintain open and cooperative communication with parents supporting home/school connection. Conduct parent/teacher conferences. Demonstrate cultural competency and respect for children’s backgrounds by incorporating their cultural, linguistic and familial values and beliefs into the classroom. In accordance with Title 22 and NAEYC ELP Standards, complete daily general cleaning tasks to maintain a clean and organized environment to support the health and safety both indoors and outdoors. Maintain punctuality with work hours. Attend and participate in mandatory monthly staff meetings, weekly team meetings, trainings, and other professional growth opportunities. Communicate and works effectively with other staff members by modeling positive behavior, positive attitude and language. Maintain confidentiality for children, families, and staff. Consistently align classroom environment consistently with NAEYC ELP Program Standards and Environmental Rating Scales (ERS). Maintains and submits accurate, complete, and timely assignments and agency records. Performs other duties as assigned by Center Director/Site Supervisor or Assistant Site Supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Working toward an AA, BA or MA in Early Childhood Education, Human Development or related field. 24 Early Childhood Education or Child Development units including core courses – (Child/Human Growth & Development, Child/Family Community or Child Family Relations, and Program/Curriculum) and 3 Infant/Toddler units. 1 year experience working with children or in an infant/toddler room. Current certification of Pediatric and Adult CPR and First Aid. Must successfully pass background check, fingerprinting and health screening (including negative TB test and verification of immunizations) prior to employment or initial presence in the facility. Current immunizations include MMR, Tdap, TB test, Influenza (or waiver), and COVID with booster.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, sit, and visually scan environment to ensure child safety indoors and outdoors. Use of office machines and facility equipment. Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of child development theory and practice. Current knowledge and experience with play‑based practices and learning with young children (0 – 5). Experience in classroom management and the ability to exercise control and maintain classroom discipline. Ability to develop and maintain professional relationship and set appropriate boundaries. Must be flexible to work in different classrooms with ethnically divers and culturally pluralistic children, families, staff, college students, and volunteers.
